The corrosion behaviors of pure titanium and its weldment welded by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding in simulated desulfurized flue gas condensates in thermal power plant chimney were investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and immersion tests. The effects of heat input and shielding gases on the corrosion behavior of the welded titanium were also studied. Grain coarsening and Widmanstätten structure were found in both the fusion zone and the heat-affected zone. The welded titanium exhibited active-passive behavior in the simulated condensates. Both the polarization curves and EIS measurements confirmed that TIG welding process with different parameters had few effects on the corrosion behavior. It was proved that the microstructure changes were not the key material factors affecting the corrosion behavior of pure titanium under the test conditions, while the oxide film had remarkable effect on improving the corrosion resistance.

Effect of Hydrogen Precharging on Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Pure Titanium

The electrolytic hydrogen precharging process is used to analyze the influence of hydrogen on the microstructure, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of pure titanium. The results demonstrate that two types of titanium hydrides (δ‐TiHx and ϵ‐TiH2) are detected by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and the volume fraction of titanium hydrides, the local strain caused by hydrogen precipitation, and the thickness of hydrides layer increase with the increase in precharging time. It is noteworthy that the formation of hydrides layer has a protective effect on general corrosion, but the local strain caused by hydrides precipitation leads to the destruction of corrosion resistance, as a result the corrosion resistance of pure titanium increases first and then decreases with the increase in hydrogen precharging time. Moreover, with the precipitation of hydrides, the fracture mode changes from ductile failure to duplex‐ and multimode failure, resulting in the decrease in ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation. Therefore, the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the precharged samples first increase and then decrease with the increase in precharging time, reaching their optimum values at 10 h, and the critical precharging time is determined to be 75 h when comparing those properties with pure titanium.

A Novel Al‐Rich/Ti–6Al–4V Layered Composite with Superior Wear and Electrochemical Behavior

By adding a certain amount of Al to the surface of Ti–6Al–4V (TC4) alloy, a novel layered composite composed of TC4 alloy matrix and Al‐rich alloy is designed and successfully fabricated by a blended elemental powder metallurgy (BE PM) method. The results demonstrated that after the addition of 1 wt% Al, the layered composite exhibits superior wear and electrochemical behavior over powder metallurgy Ti–6Al–4V (PM TC4) alloy, which indicates that a wear‐resistant and corrosion‐resistant layer can be in situ synthesized on the sample surface. Moreover, the volume fraction of α phase, the thickness of α colonies, porosity, Rockwell hardness, and wear resistance of the layered composites increase significantly with Al addition, resulting in the decrease in area, width, and depth of wear tracks, and the reduction of average friction coefficients (COFs). Furthermore, with the addition of Al, the galvanic effect at the interface of α/β phase reduces, whereas the porosity of the layered composites, the chemical activity, and the corrosion rate of α phase increase significantly. Therefore, the corrosion resistance of the layered composites increases first and then decreases with Al addition, and the optimum value can be achieved when the added amount of Al is 1 wt%.
