The effect of feeding fattener pigs with hybrid rye on selected growth and carcass traits and on meat quality characteristics

Abstract: Modern hybrid varieties of the rye can be successfully used for feeding pigs. The aim of the research was to determine the effects of different levels (20 %, 40 % and 60 %) of hybrid rye in diet on the growth, slaughter value, chemical composition, physical and sensory traits and the fatty acids profile in pork meat. The experiment was performed with 100 Polish Landrace pigs that were randomly allocated into 4 groups: control, without rye and experimental with hybrid rye addition. After slaughter lean meat con… Show more

“…Due to the ongoing rise in the price of feed ingredients and the limited quantity of raw materials [29], it is crucial to find adequate substitutes for frequently used feedstuffs to satisfy the nutritional needs of swine. Therefore, the increasing availability of sustainable grains such as hybrid rye to use as an alternative feedstuff has raised interest in swine production [15,30]. However, relatively little is known about whether feeding rye to transition sows has effects on the sow or piglets.…”

“…Therefore, feeding rye to pigs has become increasingly interesting. Modern hybrid rye varieties can be successfully used for feeding pigs [15]. Feeding pigs in amounts of up to 60% hybrid rye did not influence the daily growth, carcass traits, or meat quality characteristics of the pigs [15].…”

“…Among other things, this is why cultivation generates a relatively low CO 2 footprint (7). Thus, an old and traditional feedstuff is experiencing growing interest (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Generally, wheat and rye are characterized by different amounts of starch and crude fiber (3), moreover crude protein levels of wheat are 17-33% higher than those of rye (3,16).…”
