The Effect of Fabric Type of Common Iranian Working Clothes on the Induced Cardiac and Physiological Strain Under Heat Stress

Abstract: The present study compared the effect of fabric type of working clothes on heat strain responses in different levels of physical workload and under different kinds of weather conditions. Four kinds of working clothing fabric that are greatly popular in Iranian industry were assessed on 18 healthy male at 2 environments: hot and humid (dry temperature [DBt]: 35°C and relative humidity [RH]: 70%) and hot and dry (DBt: 40°C and RH: 40%). The physiological responses such as heart rate and core body temperature wer… Show more

“…Clothing, as an insulator, affects heat transfer processes. Thin, light-colored, and relatively loose-fitting clothing can help the heat loss in hot environments (41). A practical method to control heat strain in hot environments is cooling clothes (cooling vests), produced in late 1950s.…”

“…The application should have reflected the load level for various activities, the type of fabric for environmental conditions, physiological responses such as heart rate, temperature, and tension. (18) Previously, there was an example in which an ECG sensor was applied to a shirt, but there was no research that developed a shirt that can acquire accurate ECG information with a specialized design based on the general body shape of men in their 40s. On this point the present study has superiority, and is different to existing studies.…”

“…Heat stress as one of the harmful physical agents in the workplace can cause fatigue, muscle cramps, heat exhaustion, heat rash and neurological and psychological effects and can reduce work efficiency in hot environments (Mazloumi et al ., ; Monazzam et al ., ). Although in mild and moderate disorders such as muscle cramps and heat exhaustion there is no damage to the body's temperature regulating mechanisms, in heat shock these mechanisms will be impaired and there is even a risk of death (Nybo and Nielsen, ; Parvari et al ., ).…”
