“…Only the secretion of OXA increased under the influence of PGs. In our previous studies, a similar pattern of orexin system expression was observed in the endometrium under the influence of P 4 and oestrogens (Dobrzyn et al, 2018;Kiezun et al, 2019). These findings suggest that similarly to steroids, PGs can decrease uterine sensitivity to OXs during this period of gestation to maintain high production of steroids and PGs in the endometrium.…”

“…Although the regulation of orexin system expression in various tissues has been extensively examined, little is known about the factors that can affect this process in the uterus. Our latest studies have demonstrated that both progesterone (P 4 ) and oestrogens (E 1 and E 2 ) can act as regulators of orexin system expression, at least in the porcine uterus during early pregnancy and the oestrous cycle (Dobrzyn et al, 2018;Kiezun et al, 2019). However, we hypothesised that other key regulators of female reproduction may also affect orexin system expression in the uterus.…”

“…Most authors focus on the role of OXA, which is regarded as a more important and active hormone than OXB. However, our earlier studies (Kiezun et al., 2019; Smolinska et al., 2017) demonstrated that during early pregnancy, the concentrations of OXB in porcine plasma and uterine luminal fluid, as well as in culture media after culturing porcine endometrial slices exceeded OXA levels. The above could suggest that despite its lower activity and affinity for orexin receptors, OXB could play an equally important role to OXA in the reproductive tract due to the higher concentrations of this hormone in the uterine environment.…”

“…P4 can stimulate the production and release of uterine secretions in early pregnancy, thus regulating pregnancy [ 54 ]. Oestrogen is a key hormone that controls maternal reproductive function, pregnancy establishment and early embryonic implantation [ 55 ]. Serum levels of oestrogen and progesterone are significantly increased in mice treated with antioxidants in early pregnancy [ 56 ].…”
