The Effect of Endoscopic Olfactory Cleft Opening on Obstructed Olfactory Cleft Disease

Abstract: Purpose. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of endoscopic olfactory cleft (OC) opening on olfaction in patients with obstructed OC disease. Materials and Methods. Patients with obstructed OC disease who underwent endoscopic OC opening for treatment were enrolled. The endoscopic olfactory cleft opening was performed under local anesthesia. Under an endoscopy, the middle and superior turbinates were gently lateralized to open the OC using an elevator. The phenyl ethyl alcohol threshold test was perf… Show more

“…The MCA 2 of both nostrils was averaged to give a mean MCA 2 (cm 2 ). The smell function was evaluated using the phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) threshold test [ 19 ] and the traditional Chinese version of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT-TC) (Sensonics, Inc., Hadden Heights, NJ, USA) [ 20 ]. The saccharine transit test involves placing saccharine granules under the head of the inferior turbinate in the more severely affected nostril.…”

“…It is well-known that complications and olfactory disruption occur after nasal surgery ( Pfaar et al, 2004 ; Alobid et al, 2013 ). The removal of lesions in the olfactory cleft (OC) aims to open the pathway to the olfactory mucosa (OM), thereby maximizing olfactory functional outcomes ( Jiang and Liang, 2020 ). However, this removal of lesions in the OC ( Hurtt et al, 1988 ; Delank and Stoll, 1998 ) or the approach of OM removal remains controversial because of the risk of iatrogenic hyposmia or anosmia secondary to OM damage.…”

“…1C, arrow). Endoscopic right sinus surgery was performed to remove the abscess, free the OC and perform biopsies [2]. Histological analysis confirmed the presence of filamentous bacteria grains around a sinusal foreign plant body, characteristic of Actinomyces (Grocott positive, Gram positive and Ziehl negative) (Fig.…”
