The effect of endogenous antioxidant glabridin on oxidized LDL

Abstract: Oxidative stress is thought to play a central role in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, and the oxidative modification of LDL is thought to be a key factor during early atherogenesis. Therefore, the prevention of LDL oxidation by antioxidants might arrest the progression of atherosclerosis. This study was conducted to determine the effect of glabridin, a natural polyphenolic isoflavone antioxidant isolated from licorice root, on LDL oxidation. The determination of the extent of LDL oxidation was accompl… Show more

“…Glabridin, a natural polyphenolic isoflavone antioxidant from licorice root extract in HMF possesses potent free radical scavenging activity that could promote a decrease in lipid peroxidation and could protect LDL from oxidation [ 93 ]. This would occur via a direct interaction with the lipoprotein and/or an indirect effect through accumulation in arterial macrophages.…”

“…During atherosclerosis, smooth muscle cells become activated by oxLDL, start to proliferate, and migrate into the intima of the arterial wall where they form foam cells [2]. Many studies have shown that increase of oxLDL have significant roles in the induction of oxidative stress related changes [3]. Hypercholesterolemia and increased oxidative stress have been involved in the development of atherosclerosis [4,5].…”

“…Honda and colleagues suggest that a decrease in abdominal adipose tissue weight may be mediated by the transcriptional regulation of SREBP-1c and PPAR-alpha in the liver [4]. Aside from the potential effects of LFO on adipose tissue accumulation, a flavonoid component of the licorice root, glabridin, has been shown to have antioxidant properties [5], which may assist in attenuating lipid peroxidation.…”
