The effect of EMDR versus EMDR 2.0 on emotionality and vividness of aversive memories in a non-clinical sample

Abstract: Background: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a treatment meant to reduce vividness and emotionality of distressing memories. There is accumulating evidence that working memory taxation is the core of the working mechanism of EMDR therapy and that EMDR derives its effect by taxing the working memory (WM) with a dual task while actively keeping a disturbing memory in mind. From a theoretical stance, based upon assumptions derived from the WM theory, the effectiveness of EMDR therap… Show more

“…More importantly, group EMDR may represent an effective strategy as an early intervention and prevention of the development of psychological disorders in the long term following situations of acute stress [102]. Interestingly, miRNA-29a was identified as a response predictor for EMDR integrative effects [103] (while a mindfulness intervention [104] was found to improve cognitive function [105] by increasing the neuronal expression of miRNA-29c [106]), so a group EMDR intervention may represent an effective strategy to promote integration in clinical [52] and non-clinical individuals [107].…”

“…In EMDR therapy, patients imagine the most disturbing part of a traumatic event, while straining their working memory capacities by visually following the therapist's finger movements or other working memory-demanding elements to maximise the working memory load. The version of EMDR therapy used was EMDR 2.0 (see Matthijssen et al, 2021 ). This new therapy variant uses the same (standard EMDR) protocol but utilises a higher dose with regard to the working memory load than regular EMDR therapy.…”

“…Implementing dual tasks can reduce the vividness and emotionality of aversive memories, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy ( 54 – 56 ), drawing complex figures ( 57 ), and mental arithmetic ( 27 ). The underlying mechanism is assumed to be the working memory (WM) theory.…”
