The effect of ejaculatory frequency on semen characteristics of normozoospermic and oligozoospermic men from an infertile population

Abstract: The characteristics were examined of 87 consecutive semen samples obtained from participants of an intra-uterine insemination (IUI) programme. The population investigated comprised 65 normozoospermic, 13 moderately oligozoospermic and nine severely oligozoospermic individuals. “…Effects upon Sertoli cell function were also suggested in this earlier study on the basis of a lead-induced decrease in the inhibin to follicle stimulating hormone ratio. Since ejaculatory frequency has been shown to adversely affect semen characteristics (Matilsky et al, 1993) and since there is no effective means of enforcing abstinence on the monkeys used in this study, we elected to assess the semen characteristics during five different months over the course of one year, representing the four different seasons.
