Until recently, the reproductive ecology of human males has not been extensively investigated, primarily as a result of the need for a theoretical framework based on the reproductive constraints and energetics of mammalian males. More specifically, male reproductive ecology has necessitated an integrative interpretation of clinical and anthropological data based on the premise that the evolution of human male life histories has involved selection for physiological mechanisms aimed at optimizing trade-offs between survivorship and reproductive effort. This paper attempts to address this gap in our understanding by presenting the current state of male reproductive ecology, including physiologic data from clinical and anthropological investigations as well as recent theoretical developments. Recent investigations outlining population variation in reproductive endocrine function are discussed within the context of potential sources of variation, including energetic expediture, caloric intake, and developmental canalization during adolescence. Additional summaries of male senescence and behavior are presented to provide a complete overview of male life history. Implications of recent anthropological data on contemporary health issues such as prostate cancer and the development of a male contraceptive are also discussed. Finally, several theories are presented that may contribute to our understanding of the evolution of male life histories and reproductive ecology, including theoretical suggestions involving the role of competition, mate choosiness, and potential constraints on male insemination ability, as well as a theory suggesting that male reproductive ecology may be best understood by analyzing energetic allocation decisions between differing somatic tissues that may be indicative of the competing needs for optimizing survivorship and reproductive effort. Directions for future research are finally considered.

Exposure to lead has been associated with a variety of adverse reproductive outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, impaired fecundity, and sterility. Although decreased sperm counts and serum testosterone levels have been found in men with occupational lead exposure, animal experiments suggest that fertility may be impaired at blood lead levels that have no apparent effect on reproductive hormone levels or sperm concentration. Consequently, this study investigated the effect of chronic lead treatment on semen quality in healthy cynomolgus monkeys aged 15-20 years with mean (+/-SD) blood lead levels of 10 +/- 3 micrograms/dL (range 6-20 micrograms/dL, n = 4) and 56 +/- 49 micrograms/dL (range 22-148 micrograms/dL, n = 7) compared to a reference group with blood lead levels < 1.0 microgram/dL (n = 8). Blood and semen samples were collected once from each monkey in five different months. Serum testosterone levels were determined by radioimmunoassay, and lead effects on chromatin structure were analyzed by flow cytometry. There were no effects of treatment on circulating levels of testosterone or parameters of semen quality such as sperm count, viability, motility, and morphology. However, significant (p < 0.03) treatment-related effects were seen on SD alpha t values in the treated vs control animals. Group comparisons also revealed that the effects of chronic lead exposure were significant (p < 0.05) for both lead-exposed groups compared to the reference group. We conclude that chronic lead exposure alters sperm chromatin structure at blood lead levels relevant to the human population and in the absence of effects on endocrine function and traditional measures of semen quality.

Objetivo: avaliar a influência do período de abstinência sexual sobre os parâmetros espermáticos em homens inférteis, assim como determinar a melhora na qualidade seminal após mistura dos ejaculados. Métodos: estudo retrospectivo no qual se avaliou um grupo de 88 homens com oligozoospermia (n=25), astenozoospermia (n=43) ou oligoastenozoospermia (n=20), cujas parceiras foram submetidas à inseminação intra-uterina entre setembro de 2002 e dezembro de 2004. Foram excluídos da análise casais nos quais os homens apresentavam análise seminal normal ou mulheres com alterações sugestivas de infertilidade. Cada homem produziu duas amostras seminais em período curto de tempo (30 minutos a 1 hora). Foram avaliados o volume seminal, a concentração total de espermatozóides móveis e o percentual de motilidade espermática. Para todos os parâmetros avaliados foram comparadas a primeira e a segunda amostra seminal coletadas. Além disso, a concentração total de espermatozóides móveis foi comparada entre a primeira amostra coletada e a união das amostras. A avaliação estatística foi realizada usando o teste t e o teste χ 2 . Resultados: em homens oligozoospérmicos não houve diferença nas características seminais entre a primeira e a segunda amostra seminal (p>0,05). A concentração total de espermatozóides móveis aumentou significativamente na segunda amostra em comparação à primeira amostra em homens astenozoospérmicos (42,4±6,8 vs 51,5±7,2x10 6 espermatozóides/mL) e oligoastenozoospérmicos (11,1±7,4 vs 14,35±7,2x10 6 espermatozóides/mL (p<0,05). A união dos dois ejaculados aumentou a concentração total de espermatozóides móveis em comparação à primeira amostra (p<0,05) nos homens oligozoospérmicos, astenozoospérmicos e oligoastenozoospérmicos em 110,5, 110,3 e 136,03%, respectivamente. Conclusões: menor período de abstinência está associado a melhora da motilidade em homens inférteis. A união das amostras seminais constitue alternativa para aumentar a concentração total de espermatozóides móveis neste grupo de pacientes que desejam participar de inseminação intra-uterina ao invés da fertilização in vitro.
