BackgroundBody image altered is the most important psychosocial concern associated with breast cancer. Yet, there is a paucity of information regarding strategies for coping with this problem. This study aimed to explore Iranian breast cancer women’s strategies for coping with body image altered.MethodsThis qualitative study was conducted in 2016–2017. A purposive sample of 36 women with breast cancer was selected with maximum variation from three health care centers in Alborz Province, Iran. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and analyzed by performing conventional qualitative content analysis.ResultsThe main theme of the study was “reconstruction of feminine identity” with the six main categories of physical appearance improvement, active information seeking, self-care for managing limits, psychological self-empowerment, maintaining maternal role, and maintaining wife role.ConclusionIranian breast cancer women’s strategies for coping with body image altered are multidimensional and are mainly based on personal resources. Breast cancer women use these strategies to reconstruction of their feminine identity. Health policy-makers can use the findings of the present study to develop interventions and programs for improving breast cancer women’s body image care.

This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the impact of a midwife-led psycho-education intervention on reducing fear of childbirth (FOC) and perceived stress (PS) in pregnant women. The present study involved 96 pregnant women. The intervention group received three 30–45 min telephone sessions using ‘BELIEF’ (Birth Emotion-Looking to Improve Expectant Fear) psycho-education approach. The outcomes were assessed using questionnaires on childbirth attitudes and PS. Data analysis was performed using Stata version 17. In the intervention group, the mean score for FOC decreased from 39.41 ± 7.02 to 29.91 ± 5.60 (9.5; 24.1%). The mean difference (MD) of 28.22% was statistically significant (adjusted MD: −10.51, 95% CI: −11.60, −9.41, P < 0.001). In the intervention group, mean scores for PS decreased from 22.77 ± 6.94 to 18.23 ± 5.69 (4.54; 19.93%). In the control group, scores increased from 22.68 ± 6.76 to 24.82 ± 6.58 (2.14; 9.43%). The 29.36% MD was statistically significant (aMD: −6.95, 95% CI: −8.73, −5.18, P < 0.001). The findings of this study indicate that the midwife-led psycho-education intervention, utilizing the ‘BELIEF’ protocol over the telephone, has a significant effect on reducing FOC and PS, as well as increasing the preference for vaginal birth.

Background: The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are associated with side effects that can affect patients' self-efficacy and various aspects of their quality of life, including their sexual function. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of sexual counseling and education based on self-efficacy theory on the sexual function of women with breast cancer. Method: This randomized controlled trial used a pretest, posttest, control group, and one-month follow-up design. It included 45 female breast cancer survivors, recruited from the clinics and hematology wards of Bushehr, Iran. The inclusion criterion was that at least three months should have passed since the last chemotherapy/radiotherapy. The participants were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received two training sessions and three counseling sessions based on efficacy theory. A demographic information form and a female sexual function index questionnaire were used for data collection, and the participants completed the questionnaire in the pretest, posttest, and follow-up stages. Chi-square, Mann–Whitney U, repeated-measures ANOVA, and Fisher's Least Significant Difference (LSD) test were used to analyze the data. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: At the posttest stage, statistically significant improvements were noted in the intervention group for arousal (P<0.001), orgasm (P = 0.008), sexual satisfaction (P<0.001), and overall FSFI score (P<0.001), which did not have a significant statistical difference until the follow-up stage. In the control group, the overall FSFI score, orgasm, and sexual satisfaction decreased at follow-up compared to those of the pretest and posttest. Conclusion: The scores of overall FSFI and most of its domains were higher in the experimental group than in the control group, an ability that can be attributed to the effect of sexual education and counseling. It is recommended to use this non-invasive, low-cost, and easy method together with other medical procedures.
