“…In some cases, the synonyms were very close such as using the term psychological well-being synonymously with the term well-being [Essex et al, 1999;Esbensen et al, 2006]. In other cases, synonyms for well-being included adjustment [Glidden et al, 2006], adaptation [Kersh et al, 2006], family functioning [Warfield et al, 2000], and psychological distress [Emerson et al, 2006]. This same extent of overlap was evident in the studies focusing on adaptation and family functioning.…”

The most consistent themes across the studies of internal family characteristics are that behavior problems of children and adults with ID [Eisenhower and Blachard, 2006 [Warfield et al, 2000], and general social support [Lustig and Akey, 1999]. In all three cases the supports investigated had a positive impact on the family outcome measures used in the studies.…”

“…The intensity of services was also the subject of a study by Warfield et al . (), which in contrast to the previous study found that a higher intensity of services was significantly and positively correlated with increased family cohesion and further increase in support. Judge (), in his study conducted with 69 parents of children with special needs or at risk of developmental delays participating in programmes, also found that EI service providers who had spent more time with those families studied (number of contact hours per month, ranging from less than one hour per month to over five hours per month) had a more positive assessment with regard to their practical support.…”

“…Although some dated back to the 1980s, researchers still apply them to current studies of families with children with and without disabilities (e.g. Warfield et al . 2000; Trute 2003; Nachshen & Minnes 2005; Lewis et al .…”
