The effect of denture installation at mandibular rest position on unsteady motion of the centre of pressure in postural sway

Abstract: Wearing dentures has been believed to decrease the instability of the postural sway using the total length of centre of pressure (CoP) trajectory or the magnitude of its variability. However, the physical aspects of the postural sway have not been taken into account while evaluating the CoP in patients who wear dentures. The CoP fluctuations are found to show a random walk process. Therefore, changes in the random movement of CoP caused by wearing dentures should be examined by nonlinear dynamics that enables … Show more

“…In the ICP condition, participants need to perform slight isometric contraction of the jaw‐closing muscles to keep the upper and lower teeth in contact for 10 s, resulting in fatigue, which can be reflected in an increase in postural sway. Furthermore, we previously postulated that maintaining ICP may result in a decreased efficiency of oxygen intake, due to less ventilation of the airway through a narrower oral cavity, 28 as compared to RP, especially for mouth breathers. Indeed, several previous studies have revealed that breathing conditions affect postural sway, 29 and are related to metabolic energy consumption 30 .…”

“…Several studies have shown an association between dental interventions with prosthetic devices and physical function in older adults. Yoshino et al reported that wearing complete dentures may reduce kinetic energy and contribute to postural control 11 . Fujinami et al showed that complete dentures contribute to the suppression of centre of gravity sway in the standing posture, 12 and Theron et al suggested a significant change in head posture at rest between patients with and without complete dentures 13 .…”
