The Effect of Deep Cryogenic Treatment on the Corrosion Behavior of Mg-7Y-1.5Nd Magnesium Alloy

Abstract: Abstract:The effect of quenching on the corrosion resistance of Mg-7Y-1.5Nd alloy was investigated. The as-cast alloy was homogenized at 535 • C for 24 h, followed by quenching in air, water, and liquid nitrogen. Then, all of the samples were peak-aged at 225 • C for 14 h. The microstructures were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion behavior was analyzed by using weight loss rate and gas collection. Electrochemical characterizations revealed… Show more

“…The chemical composition of individual phases was determined by EDS (secondary electron mode) analysis and is given in Tables 2 and 3. As shown in Figure 1, the microstructure of the as-cast alloy consists of the α-Mg matrix, particle phases, and skeleton phases [41][42][43][44]. The phases occurring in the tested alloys are Mg 39 Zn for the Mg 72 Zn 24 Ca 4 alloy ( Figure 1a) and Mg 2 Zn 11 for the Zn 87 Mg 9 Ca 4 alloy ( Figure 1b).…”

“…This coating was found to provide a five-fold improvement in the corrosion resistance in human body fluid. This study also includes thorough electrochemical analysis, and provides a mechanistic insight into the improvement in corrosion resistance due to the composite coating. In the second study, alloying elements were added to magnesium to develop secondary precipitates for strengthening [2]. These secondary precipitates are invariably highly cathodic to the magnesium alloy solid solution matrix, and hence, cause severe localised corrosion.…”
