The Effect of Decay on Growth Rate in a White Spruce Plantation

Abstract: In a white spruce plantation, sound dominant and codominant trees increased their total volume by 55.3% between ages 36 and 46 years, while trees with butt decay grew only 44.0%. In net terms, during that 10-year period. sound trees produced 27% more wood in volume than trees with butt decay. Growth reduction increased with increasing amount of decay present, but not in comparable proportions. This is explained by the presence mainly of root and butt rot fungi which severely affect the root system before causi… Show more

“…That plantations of white spruce are more heavily attacked by this fungus than naturally seeded white spruce is further suggested by the high numbers of trees attacked in the Grand Mbre plantations in Qutbec (Lachance 1978). Spread of the fungus from root to root, as is common with this fungus (Whitney 1962), would be facilitated to a greater extent in a pure spruce plantation than in natural stands.…”

“…Killed roots and infected tissue in living infected trees interfere with the growth of the tree for many years before tree death occurs (Whitney 1962). Lachance (1978) found that sound 46-year-old planted white spruce at Grand Mkre, Qukbec, produced 27% more wood over a 10-year period than still-living trees with butt rot caused primarily by I. tomentosus. Losses due to growth reduction were not calculated in the present study.…”

“…The fungus spreads from infected roots or stumps by root contact and can remain in stumps for up to 30 years (Lewis and Hansen 1991).The disease can cause mortality, growth loss, and butt cull in mature trees. Studies by Lachance (1978), andWhltney (1993) have shown that the disease can have serious consequences in white spruce plantations. Whitney (1993) reported an average annual mortality of 0.7% in white spruce with an average accumulated mortality (after six years) of 10.3% in dominant and co-dominant trees.…”
