“…In a paper comparing imported C. odorata mulch with no-mulching Hulugalle et al (1985), working in south east Nigeria, found no significant differences between soil bulk densities at 194 DAP; however, bulk densities were already much higher than those in the current experiment (mean 1.4 Mg m-3 ). Also in south east Nigeria, soil bulk densities under crop residue mulch, previously burned were lower (1.2 Mg m-3 ) than in an unmulched burned control (1.4 Mg m-3 ) (Obiefuna, 1991). No reference has been found comparing 'no-bum mulch' with 'bum no-mulch'.…”

“…In plantain (Musa AABgroup), positive yield responses to mulching have been observed (Wilson et al, 1986) and the effects of different mulches on vegetative growth and bunch yield studied (Salau et al, 1992;Ruhigwa et al, 1995a,b). Obiefuna (1991) found that mulch of crop residues was effective at decreasing nematode populations in plantain. Mulching is reputed also to mitigate the impact of nematodes on banana (Sikora et al, 1989;Kashaija et al, 1999), especially when applied to low fertility systems (McIntyre et al, 2000).…”

“…Taking into account the bunch weights over the duration of the experiment including the 1st crop cycle, which is reported by Rotimi (2003), yield per hectare, combining the weights of harvested bunches over the four crop cycles, for the mulched non-inoculated treatment equated to 10.4 Mg ha −1 compared with 2.1 Mg ha −1 for the non-mulched inoculated treatment. The difference is remarkable but the yield for the mulched non-inoculated treatment remains much below potential yield (Wilson et al, 1985;Obiefuna, 1991;Ngalani, 1996;Ortiz & Vuylesteke, 1996;Hauser, 2000). Yields for plantain on south eastern Nigerian ultisols, which comprise more than the 1st crop cycle, average about 17.0 Mg ha −1 , while Ruhigwa et al (1995) achieved 35.4 Mg ha −1 (cumulative yield over two years) following extensive Pennisetum purpureum mulching.…”

“…The use of nematicides to control Musa nematodes can be effective (Gowen & Quénéhérve, 1990) but is expensive for resource-poor farmers and the chemical products are often unavailable in rural areas in Africa. In addition to providing supplementary nutrients which in turn may have a positive effect on vegetative growth and yield (Wilson et al, 1985;Salau et al, 1992;Ruhigwa et al, 1995), mulching is reputed to mitigate the impact of plant-parasitic nematodes on plantain and banana (Sikora et al, 1989;Obiefuna, 1991;Speijer et al, 1998Speijer et al, , 1999Kashaija et al, 1999;Rotimi, 2003;Talwana et al, 2003), especially when applied to low fertility systems (McIntyre et al, 2000).…”
