Introduction Weight gain after breast cancer is common, and obesity after breast cancer increases breast cancer recurrence and mortality. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and yoga have been shown to be effective in managing obesity/overweight in people without breast cancer. There is a need to systematically map the extent and range of evidence on yoga and MBIs for managing obesity/overweight after breast cancer in order to aid planning and commissioning of future research. Methods We conducted a scoping review informed by methods described by Levac et al. Five electronic databases were searched for any peer-reviewed original research (including systematic reviews) that examined the role of yoga and/or MBIs for managing overweight/obesity after breast cancer. Data were extracted on study, population, intervention, comparator and outcome characteristics, and described narratively. Results: We found 18 publications representing 15 unique studies (11 clinical trials, 2 systematic reviews, and 2 observational studies). There were 10 studies on yoga, and 5 on MBIs. Of the clinical trials, only 4/11 examined a weight-related outcome as the primary outcome. The remaining trials examined lifestyle or metabolic outcomes (5/11) or unrelated outcomes such as psychological health (2/11). Gaps in the literature included small sample sizes, lack of cultural diversity amongst participants, inadequate reporting of the intervention, few lifestyle co-interventions offered, lack of active comparator groups, and inadequate safety reporting. Conclusions: There is a need for adequately-powered RCTs that adhere to reporting guidelines. The use of gold-standard methods for measuring outcomes, and active comparator groups, is also recommended.

Considerations of Control Conditions Designs in Randomized Controlled Trials of Exercise Interventions for Cancer Survivors

Background Given the multifaceted complexity in the nature of randomized controlled trials, identifying an appropriate and comparable control condition is an essential step to ensure methodological rigor, which allows for researchers to draw unambiguous conclusions concerning the efficacy of the intervention being studied. Objectives The objectives of this paper are to (a) review the current literature and analyze the control condition designs in exercise interventions targeted for cancer survivors; (b) provide an overview of the benefits and limitations of various types of control conditions used in exercise interventions; (c) discuss the considerations in the design of control conditions for exercise interventions; and (d) suggest recommendations for control condition design in future trials of behavioral interventions. Results The review of randomized controlled trials of exercise training interventions for cancer survivors revealed that the design of control conditions varied. The most commonly employed design could be classified into two major categories: (a) active controls including attention control, add-on controls, and disentailing controls; and (b) inactive controls including no-treatment, usual care, and wait-list control. Examples from the literature are presented. Four principal considerations concerning control condition design, including appropriateness, credibility, appeal, and comparability, are discussed. Recommendations on how to avoid some major threats to validity and potential biases are also provided. Conclusions Careful planning for the control group design is as important as for the intervention group. Researchers can use the considerations presented in the paper to assist in planning for the most appropriate control condition for their study.

Bibliometric Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials on Yoga Interventions for Cancer Patients: A Decade in Review

This literature review presents a bibliometric analysis of the randomized controlled trials conducted between 2014 and 2023 on the potential benefits of yoga as a complementary therapy for cancer patients. To conduct this analysis, we searched medical and scientific databases, such as Scopus, Cochrane, and PubMed, using relevant keywords. Our search yielded 58 clinical trials involving 4,762 patients, which indicates a growing trend in this field of research. The studies we reviewed mainly focused on breast cancer patients and demonstrated the adaptability and versatility of yoga, offering a ray of hope and optimism. Among the various styles of yoga, Hatha yoga was the most frequently practiced style in these clinical trials. The analysis we conducted reveals that yoga interventions have a promising role in cancer care and can be a valuable complementary therapy for cancer patients. However, significant gaps and limitations still need to be addressed in this area of research. For instance, more rigorous and diverse investigations are needed to further establish the potential benefits of yoga interventions for cancer patients. Additionally, the standardization of yoga interventions is crucial to optimize therapeutic benefits. By addressing these gaps and limitations, we can further enhance the potential of yoga as a complementary therapy for cancer patients.
