The effect of chronic stimulation of serotonin receptor type 7 on recognition, passive avoidance memory, hippocampal long-term potentiation, and neuronal apoptosis in the amyloid β protein treated rat

Abstract: These results indicate that chronic treatment with a 5-HTR7 agonist can prevent Aβ-related impairments in cognition and memory performance by alleviating Aβ plaque accumulation and neuronal apoptosis, hence improving neuronal plasticity. AS19 may be useful as a therapeutic agent for AD.

“…Following implementation of the reinstatement model, we assessed the population spike (PS) amplitude and field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) slope using an electrophysiological procedure [45,46]. Rats were anesthetized by injection of urethane (1.5 g/kg; intraperitoneal, i.p.)…”

“…Growing evidence suggests that the potential role of apoptosis in AD has become an area of intense research in recent years [45][46][47]. LPS-induced neuroin ammation enhances apoptotic neurodegeneration [48].…”

“…ICV injection of Aβ into the brain is a very economic and reliable experimental model that leads to degeneration, neurite dystrophy, synaptic integrity loss, microglia and astrocyte activation, and neuronal death, which can mimic some pathological aspects of AD brain (Shahidi, Asl, Komaki, & Hashemi‐Firouzi, ). Donepezil, a classical acetylcholinesterase inhibitor approved by Food and Drug Administration, is generally known to provide only symptomatic efficacy to AD patients.…”
