An adamantyl (ADM)-functionalized monolithic stationary phase was newly synthesized by a single-step copolymerization of 1-adamantyl-(-trifluoromethyl) acry--late, ethylene dimethacrylate, and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid in order to prevent the peak tailing of basic solutes in capillary electrochromatography and was compared with butyl methacrylate (BMA)-based one. The ADM structure shields the negatively charged groups on the surface of monolith from basic solutes, resulting in better peak shapes than BMA-based monolithic stationary phase. As the monomers ratio decreased, the monolithic column had lower retention and higher column efficiency which was likely due to lower phase ratio and smaller globule size of monolith, respectively.The ADM-functionalized monolithic columns exhibited a good repeatability and reproducibility of column preparation with relative standard deviation values below 9% in the studied chromatographic parameters.3

SummaryA method has been developed for the preparation of modified silica plates for high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC). Some typical organosilanes were thus allowed to react in situ with the silica of Merck HPTLC-plates. This method was found to be highly reproducible, simple and cheap. Non-polar plates were prepared and compared with commercial plates from Merck, Whatman and Macherey-Nagel. Modlfication with cyanodecyltrichlorosilane resulted in plates that showed good coverage, efficiency and low residual silica activity. Silica modified withamultifunctionalsilanehasdifferent propertiesindifferent organic solvents. It will appear to be non-polar in a polar solvent and vice versa. New advantageous separation systems are thus made feasible by the presence of cyano groups on the plate.The utility of modified thin-layer plates is demonstrated by the separation of some homologues of p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters and of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract-In a preliminary part, we deal with the partition mechanism of low or high molecular weight solutes, by selective dissolution in swollen gels. After summing up the theoretical expressions, we present some experimental evidences for a fractionation mechanism based on such a phenomenon, which may interfere , in many cases, with the classical steric exclusion effect in GPC. Most of this paper is devoted to chemically bonded stationary phases which gained increasing importance in H.P.L.C., during the past few years. Owing to our previous works on gels, we theoretically studied the partition coefficient of low or high molecular weight solutes between a mobile phase and a stationary phase, constituted by macromolecular chains bonded to an inert surface. Variations of partition coefficient with the molecular sizes of solute, solvent and graft, and with the molecular interaction parameters between these species, are presented. In a complementary aspect, we describe the recent preparation of model chemically bonded phases of silica/polyethyleneoxide and silica/polystyrene types. The retention data obtained for various solutes on these bonded phases are discussed in terms of silica loading, grafting chain length, solute size and solvent nature. These theoretical and experimental studies lead to practical consequences concerning the relative parts of the dissolution effect into the grafted phase, the adsorption on the mineral support and the steric exclusion effect due to the residual porosity.
