The Effect of Case Rate and Coinfection Rate on the Positive Predictive Value of a Registry Data-Matching Algorithm

Abstract: Case rates and coinfection rates have a significant effect on the PPV of a registry data-matching algorithm: PPV decreases as the case rate increases and coinfection rate decreases. Before conducting registry data matching, program staff should assess the case rate and coinfection rate of the population included in the data matching and select an appropriate matching algorithm.

“…The resulting data were deduplicated and matched to the New York City HIV and HCV surveillance registries to ascertain previously diagnosed and reported infection by using LinkPlus 2.0 (CDC, Atlanta, GA), a probabilistic record linkage program for cancer registry linkage and deduplication. 21…”

“…For the probabilistic approach, we used Link Plus, a records linking package developed at CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention to assist in the creation of cancer registries . The software is freely available and has been used in a variety of projects . From the available choices, we selected Link Plus because it offers flexible options for matching on predefined fields, allows the use of street address as a matching variable, and can quickly process moderate sized files (e.g.…”

[14][15][16][17] From the available choices, we selected Link Plus because it offers flexible options for matching on predefined fields, allows the use of street address as a matching variable, and can quickly process moderate sized files (e.g. matching 60 000 deliveries to 150 000 infants in 9 min on a desktop computer with four processors and four gigabytes of RAM), allowing rapid calibration of matching parameters.…”
