The effect of carbon and polypropylene fibers on thermal shock resistance of the refractory castable

Abstract: This work investigates medium cement refractory castable with additives of carbon and polypropylene fibers. The peculiarities of microstructure changes in the fiber and castable matrix contact zone, channel formation, and changes of cold crushing strength of fiber additives, which have a refractory castable matrix under temperature treatment, were investigated. The investigation results allowed to predict that using a mix of fibers more effective than using them individually. The influence of fiber additives … Show more

“…Phan and Carino's work was also reproduced and confirmed as reliable by other scientists. In fact, research efforts were carried out concurrently in the search for various solutions to lower and/or eliminate the aforementioned asymmetric disintegration [14,15]. Research by Lithuanian scientists raised concrete resistance to fire through the inclusion of various additions [14].…”

“…In fact, research efforts were carried out concurrently in the search for various solutions to lower and/or eliminate the aforementioned asymmetric disintegration [14,15]. Research by Lithuanian scientists raised concrete resistance to fire through the inclusion of various additions [14]. They determined that not only concrete drying temperature treatments, but also drying methods, exercise significant influence on concrete explosive disintegration [15].…”

“…Researchers that studied MK pozzolanic effect on cement materials and their properties determined their positive effect on final product properties [ 13 , 14 ]. MK can also be successfully used in really strong concrete production.…”

“…Thus, the formation of a heterogeneous structure by combining components with rather different coefficients of thermal expansion makes it possible to obtain a system of microstructurally small cracks that reduce the modulus of elasticity and effectively inhibit the propagation of larger cracks [ 5 , 9 ]. It has been noted that thermal shock resistance of a material can be improved by creating a fragmentary structure [ 10 ] and by reinforcing it with fibers of different nature: metallic, ceramic, and carbon [ 11 , 12 ]. A structure of controlled fragmentation is more mobile and the grains and crystals in such a structure can expand freely without causing additional stresses.…”
