The Effect of Carbamazepine on Endocrine and Sleep EEG Variables in a Patient with 48-Hour Rapid Cycling, and Healthy Controls

Abstract: Carbamazepine treatment of a patient with 48-hour rapid cycling led to a dampening of mood cycling, and prolonged rapid eye movement (REM) sleep latency. No effect on central α-receptors as measured by growth hormone (GH) secretion after clonidine stimulation or on spontaneous 48-hour GH secretion was observed. In 12 healthy subjects given 400 mg carbamazepine daily for a period of 5 days, improved sleep continuity and increased slow-wave sleep occurred with treatment. REM sleep percentage and REM latency rema… Show more

“…Riemann/Voderholzer/Berger Our own work in a rapid cycling patient with day-today changes from hypomanic to depressed mood revealed that sleep following a manic day showed the same abnormalities of REM sleep as the sleep following a depressed day [Riemann et al, 1993a;Gann et al, 1993].…”

“…These data are strikingly close to our data in BPD patients. In the studies by Riemann et al [73] and Gann et al [74], CBZ did not modify REM latency and REM percentage in healthy people. This was also the case in our BPD patients.…”

“…Regarding the sleep EEG parameters, CBZ has been shown to increase SWS [72][73][74] from 6.8 B 5.3 to 13.2 B 7% in healthy subjects. These data are strikingly close to our data in BPD patients.…”
