In orthodontic fixed appliance therapy, the archwire torque used to refine the teeth position during the treatment imparts significant forces inside the bracket slot. The objective of this study was to measure the torque relevant bracket slot deformation in Stainless Steel (SS) brackets during various degree of archwire twist. Standard edgewise brackets 0.018-inch (in.)/0.022-in. each 20 no. and 0.016 × 0.022, 0.017 × 0.025, 0.019 × 0.025, and 0.021 × 0.025 in. archwires each 10 no. were used. A novel experimental setup consisting of loading fixture and torque key mounted on a Vision Measuring System (VMS) were used to measure the brackets slot deformation. The Top Slot and Middle Slot Deformations (TSD and MSD) of the brackets for 35° angle of twist in 0.016 × 0.022 in. archwire in 0.018-in. slot, 0.019 × 0.025 in. archwire in 0.022-in. slot and for 30° angle of twist in 0.017 × 0.025 in. archwire in 0.018-in. slot and 0.021 × 0.025 in. archwire in 0.022-in. slot were measured. Results showed that the mean TSD and MSD were higher when the archwire size, the slot size and the angle of twist were greater. In the evaluated bracket-archwire combinations, the TSD were higher than MSD and the bracket slots were elastically deformed within the clinically required 35° angle of twist in the archwire. Clinicians should be aware of this torque relevant bracket slot deformation which might be a factor for torque loss and suitably incorporate archwire angle of twist.

Introduction: : Dental malocclusion is a public health problem and orthodontics is the specialty in charge of diagnosing and treating it, aesthetic brackets are an alternative, the costs are varied, which makes its precision doubtful. Objective: Evaluate the measurement and geometry of the slot of three brands of aesthetic brackets and verify their precision. Material and Methods: Twenty-four aesthetic Roth prescription 0.022” slot polycrystalline ceramic brackets were evaluated in three brands: American Orthodontics (United States), Morelli (Brazil) and Class One (China). Eight samples were measured per group in a specialized laboratory certified in measurement and calibration, the measurements of internal and external height were verified, per mesial and distal; and the parallelism of the slot of each bracket. The results were processed with SPSS 22 and tests of variance (ANOVA), Tukey and Student's t were used. Results: The measurements of the brackets' grooves do not correspond to the measurements announced by the manufacturers, these are greater, however, American Orthodontics is within the tolerance range (p<0.01); the slots in the mesio-distal direction and the lingual vestibule are not parallel in Morelli and Class One. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the slots of the supports are oversized, their geometry is not precise and varies greatly between brands and prices. The three-dimensional control of the tooth could be compromised.

Objectives To assess the super-elasticity of CuNiTi wires (Ormco, Glendora, Calif) according to their Austenite finish temperature (Af) and to the imposed displacement. The secondary objective was to compare the wire dimensions with the stated measurements and to study interbatch variability. Materials and Methods 10 types of CuNiTi wires (Ormco, Glendora, Calif) (n = 350) were investigated at 36 ± 1°C, with conventional brackets (Victory Series, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif). Tensile test with coronoapical displacement ranging from 1 to 5 mm of the canine bracket was imposed. The wire dimensions were initially measured from two batches (n = 10). Results Dimensional heterogeneity varied by ± 2.00% compared to the manufacturer's data, and even up to 5.54% for 0.014-inch CuNiTi (P = .00069). However, all unloading forces were reproducible. In decreasing order, the forces delivered by a CuNiTi 27 were greater than those with CuNiTi 35 and 40. The super-elasticity was expressed only for displacements of 1 to 2 mm, at best up to 3 mm for 0.014-inch CuNiTi 27. Conclusions The value of Af as well as the amount of imposed displacement seem to influence the expression of the super-elasticity of CuNiTi wires and the amount of corrected malocclusion. Among the tested wires, under these experimental conditions, 0.014-inch wire could be suitable as a first archwire. CuNiTi 35, therefore, seems to offer the best compromise among the force level, the expression of super-elasticity and the amount of malocclusion correction.
