The Effect of Biochar, Lime, and Compost on The Properties of Acid Sulphate Soil

Abstract: <p><span style="font-size: small;"><span>Making acid sulphate soils as paddy fields is a wise choice because it can prevent the soil from oxidizing which occurs in acidification of the soil. The use of biochar as an amendment to the land has long been known since the discovery of terra preta since 1870 in the Amazon Basin as the Amazon dark earth. Because biochar soil amendments are rich in C-organics, have a buffering capacity and can increase soil acidity, are able to absorb heavy metals, a… Show more

“…Dosage doubled from the recommendation of several authors [21][22][23] still showed a linear increase. It can be concluded that twice the recommended lime dose can still be used to increase the solubility of P. The effect of ameliorants, especially biochar, on P availability was also in line with others [13,[25][26][27]…”

“…Likewise in the second and third planting seasons. Farmers become lazy or even afraid to plant their fields again [12,13]. In addition to water management, soil ameliorants which are often used to improve the fertility of dry soil acid soils can also be used to overcome acid sulfate acid soils.…”

“…Biochar utilization as soil conditoners substance had been known since 1870. Biochar has alkaline property and capable to increase soil pH as well to improve soil physical properties (Juhrian et al, 2020). In addition, biochar application on acis sulphate soil will capable to decrease aluminum solubility and iron as well as to increase P nutrient availability.…”

“…Ameliorant from biochar is able to increase water pH and increase the absorption of Al, Fe, Co, Cd, Ni and Zn [25,26]. Moreover, the application of ameliorant from compost affects the physical, chemical and biological processes of the soil [27]; while combination of straw and zeolite with lime can increase soil pH, cation exchange and reduce Al and Fe solubility [28,29].…”
