The effect of balanced and unbalanced soccer small-sided games on the rating of perceived exertion in youth players (El efecto de los partidos reducidos de fútbol equilibrados y desequilibrados em la calificación del esfuerzo percebido em los jugadores j

Abstract: The integration of methods to quantify the physical demands [e.g., Rating Perceived Exertion (RPE)] in small-sided games (SSGs) in younger soccer players, has been scarcely studied. In addition, few studies have been addressing the impact of balanced vs. unbalanced SSGs, in particular in youth players’ RPE. This study aimed to investigate differences between balanced and unbalanced format games in young soccer players’ RPE, controlling for different playing field sizes. The sample comprised 10 field pla… Show more

“…This is more perceptible on teams with fewer players as they are competing at a numerical disadvantage. Coaches normally resort to permanent inequality to promote or increase the offensive effectiveness of the team with more elements or, on the other side seeking to improve proficiency in terms of positioning and defensive cohesion on the team with the fewest players (Hill-Haas et al, 2011;Travassos et al, 2014;Sousa et al, 2021). Also, studies about imbalances in the number of players in action, indicate that will most likely be induced changes in the diversity, unpredictability and flexibility of tacticaltechnical solutions and consequent decision-making capacity.…”

“…Regarding to monitoring load in soccer, it is essential to use different tools which allow knowing the load supported by players during matches and/or training (Falces-Prieto et al, 2020b;Murillo-Lorente et al, 2016). Prior studies have showed are different methods to know the intensity of training sessions and matches such as heart rate monitors (HR) (Falces-Prieto et al, 2015), lactate level (LL) (McMillan et al, 2005), global positioning systems (GPS) (Beenham, et al, 2017;Principe et al, 2021), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) (Falces-Prieto et al, 2015;Jiménez-Barreto & Borges, 2021;Sousa et al, 2021) and well-being questionnaires such as the Wellness (Campos-Vázquez et al, 2017). Among them, the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) is a key method to monitoring psychophysiological response with players in training sessions (sRPE), due to it is non-invasive method and free (Borg, 1970).…”

“…La misma se acompañaba de escala numérica, seis etiquetas y cuatro representaciones gráficas. Este instrumento ha sido recientemente utilizado para analizar el efecto de juegos reducidos en fútbol (Sousa et al, 2021). La escala BABE, retrata una animación de una hormiga con una mochila que va subiendo escalones y la mochila iba aumentando la carga de forma creciente durante tres estadios (Parfitt, Shepherd, & Eston, 2007).…”
