The effect of auditor type on audit quality in emerging markets: evidence from Egypt

Abstract: Purpose Although a number of studies suggest that big audit firms provide higher audit quality in strict legal environments, empirical evidence remains inconclusive. As little is known about the effect of auditor type on audit quality in less strictly legal environments, this study aims to investigate the impact of auditor type on audit quality in the Egyptian market. Design/methodology/approach Data of Egyptian-listed companies during the period 2011–2018 are used. To examine the impact of auditor type on a… Show more

“…In contrast to Becker et al (1998), Eshleman and Guo (2014), Francis and Krishnan (1999), Francis and Wang (2008), Francis and Yu (2009), Krishnan (2003) and Lai (2013), the results in column 1 reveal that the test variable BIG4 is insignificantly associated with DA ( β = −0.000751, p = 0.172), even when the issue of auditor self-selection bias is ignored. This implies that Big N auditors do not have positive effect on restricting clients’ earnings management, which is consistent with prior studies (Ching et al, 2015; El-Dyasty and Elamer, 2020; Jeong and Rho, 2004; Kabir et al, 2011; Semba and Kato, 2018; Zhan et al, 2020). The result remains qualitatively unchanged (column 2) after addressing the potential endogeneity issue by employing the matched-pair sample procedure in the model ( β = −0.001731, p = 0.217).…”

“…In contrast, some studies fail to find any relationship between Big N auditors and audit quality (Almarayeh et al, 2020;Ching et al, 2015;El-Dyasty and Elamer, 2020;Jeong and Rho, 2004;Kabir et al, 2011;Zhan et al, 2020). For example, Baatwah et al (2018) choose the level of client absolute DAs and a GCO to proxy for audit quality.…”

“…The board size and government ownership are significant in explaining the quality of voluntary disclosure 3.7.4 Auditing quality. Following several scandals in the early 2000s, academic research has been motivated to investigate CG and auditing effectiveness in protecting firms' investments and shareholders' interests (El-Dyasty and Elamer, 2020). Audit effectiveness, as measured by auditing fees, is the most examined theme in this area (AlQadasi and Abidin, 2018;Bliss et al, 2007;Husnin et al, 2013Husnin et al, , 2016Johl et al, 2012;Yatim et al, 2006).…”

“…The importance of assurance in emphasising sustainability has been commonly highlighted as the most important mean of mitigating the risk of environmental violations and ensuring sustainability engagement of corporations (Coyne 2006 ; Desimone et al 2020 ). According to the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA 2021 ), audit functions add value to enterprises by strengthening risk management and improving the understanding of new emergent issues such as sustainability (Abdelfattah et al 2020 ; El-Dyasty & Elamer 2020 ; Owusu et al 2020 ). Additionally, Chiang and Torng ( 2015 ) argued that the audit component is the key point in the complete infrastructure under which the organisation’s interaction with changes in the environment can be managed.…”
