“…The anticholinergic effect could be exerted either by blocking a vagal reflex initiated by histamine stimulating irritant receptors directly and/or indirectly via bronchoconstriction, or by blocking increased acetylcholine release at the cholinergic receptor on smooth muscle cells as a result of presynaptic effects of histamine (Shore et al 1983). Cholinergic pathways for histamine effect have previously been thought to be small in man (Casterline et al 1976), or to be explained by an anticholinergic agent's bronchodilator effect rather than directly blocking a cholinergic component of histamine effect (Bandouvakis et al 1981). The present study favours the former conclusion since there was no relationship between bronchodilator effect and protection against histamine-induced bronchoconstriction.…”
