The Effect of Additives on the Low Temperature Ice-Melting Capacity of NaCl

Abstract: Cold climates cause a great number of challenges when it comes to maintaining road conditions. For instance, snowstorms, frost and ice can all create slippery and even impassible roads. Therefore, in order to ensure vehicular mobility and general road safety, winter road maintenance requires the use of plowing and applying sand or various chemicals. Regarding the latter method, chemicals are applied to weaken bonds in snow and ice, melt snow and ice or prevent ice from forming on the road. A deicing chemical m… Show more

“…3b shows that the LED strip remains bright at a temperature of approximate −47.1 °C, indicating that the PVA/QCS-C/MXene hydrogel has good frost-resistance. It is speculated that the crystallization of water in the hydrogel was suppressed due to the introduction of CaCl 2 , 7,46 which resulted in a sharp decrease in the freezing point of the PVA/QCS-C 15 /M hydrogel.…”

“…Much research has been conducted on liquid de-icers [23,24] but less on solids because of factors such as granulometry. Studies on solid RDPs often focus on NaCl and MgCl 2 [25][26][27]. Procedures for testing the melting capacity of ice rely on tools such as isothermal bottles [28] and ice cubes [29]; however, these methods require manipulation during testing, which increases the potential for error.…”

“…In the course of freezing and thawing or rewarming, controlling the ice crystals’ formation, growth, and then recrystallization influences all aspects of human activities. From transportation, cryopreservation, and industrial production to biomedical and other fields, ice is directly or indirectly involved, which is somehow lethal to living things at the macro/micro level . Intensive investigations have been carried out to control and inhibit ice growth and recrystallization including unique approaches by nature, but materials with favorable ice inhibition characteristics are still insufficient.…”
