The Effect of Acupuncture on Modulating Inflammatory Cytokines in Rodent Animal Models of Respiratory Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: PurposeAlthough respiratory diseases (RD) are rapidly becoming a global health issue due to their high mortality and prevalence, there are limitations to the currently available treatments. Acupuncture has been recognized to mitigate many diseases by reducing inflammation and modulating cytokines. However, no systematic analysis has been performed to examine the effects of acupuncture on RD. We aimed to evaluate the effects of acupuncture on rodent animal models of RD.MethodsPubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Re… Show more

“…Added to this condition, xerostomia resulting from the use of medications may have favored the manifestation of bruxism, which would play a "protective role" in maintaining airway permeability and also as a way of stimulating salivary flow. 24,27 It should be noted that the auriculotherapy intervention performed in the present case is a non-pharmacological resource already referenced in the literature, which can be used both for the treatment of respiratory and sleep disorders, as well as for bruxism as well to control anxiety and stress, 25,26,28,[29][30][31] which reinforces the fact that it has manifested itself more frequently in moments of patient agitation.…”

“…Two researchers assessed the methodological quality of each study using a 10-item checklist modified from the Collaborative Methods for the Analysis and Review of Experimental Research Animal Data (CAMARADES) checklist ( Lee and Kim, 2022 ). These included: sample size calculations, statements describing temperature and humidity control, randomization of groups, use of reasonable KOA models, assessment of modeling success, use of anesthetics with no apparent specificity, blinding of results, compliance with animal ethics regulations, published in a peer-reviewed journal or have passed peer review, and declaration of potential conflicts of interest.…”

“…Unter Abwägung verschiedener Aspekte sowie Berücksichtigung der oben aufgeführten Ergebnisse zu Akupunktur als Add-on, scheint hier ein additiver Behandlungsversuch mit Akupunktur als durchaus gerechtfertigt, insbesondere da die Akupunktur neben analgetischen auch antiinflammatorische [14,15] und antidepressive [16][17][18] Effekte entfalten kann.…”
