The Effect of Accelerators on Curing Characteristics and Properties of Natural Rubber/Chlorosulphonated Polyethylene Rubber Blend

Abstract: The aim of this work was to determine the influence of accelerator type on curing behavior and properties of sulphur vulcanized rubber blend based on natural rubber (NR) and chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM). In NR/CSM compounds filled with carbon black three types of accelerator were used: N-cyclohexylbenzothiazylsulphenamide (CBS), tetramethylthiuram disulphide (TMTD), and 2-mercaptobenzothiazol (MBT). The curing characteristics were estimated using oscillating disk rheometer. The results revealed that th… Show more

“…Various approaches have been adopted to overcome the cure incompatibility in blends of EPDM with diene rubbers as well as to acquire better filler and curatives distribution in such blends to optimize the blend properties. Those approaches included the use of blend compatibilizers , by using modified EPDM as a third blending component , two‐stage vulcanization, and utilization of different types of accelerators . The latter attempts have been found to have an influence on the mechanical properties of the blends as well.…”

“…The surface chemistry of carbon black has a significant effect only on the vulcanization behavior of compounds. The chemical or physical interaction between the filler and the rubber is a further important factor in the reinforcing effect [14,15]. Processability and final properties of elastomeric products could be obtained through a series of experiments that vary the ratios of additives and measure the effects over different temperatures and time.…”

“…The effect of added carbon black is directly related to the properties of the inter phase and due to the specific interactions between rubber macromolecules and active filler surfaces. It is well known that the properties mainly depend on the dispersion condition of filler particles and their principal relevant properties: particle size, surface area, aggregate structure, surface activity and on rubber-filler interactions (27,28). It is obvious that to obtain as many interactions as possible the polymer active segments must have access to the majority of the carbon black active sites.…”
