The Effect of a Xanthine Derivative, 1‐(5′oxohexyl)‐3‐methyl‐7‐propylxanthine (Hwa 285), on Heart Performance and Regional Blood Flow in Dogs and Rabbits

Abstract: 1 The effect of a new xanthine derivate 1-5' oxohexyl-3-methyl-7-proplyxanthine (HWA 285) was studied on heart performance in dogs and rabbits and on regional blood flow in rabbits. 2 Heart performance (cardiac output and dPldt max) in dogs was increased. Cardiac work (calculated as CO x mean BP) was not changed in dogs and did not change or was slightly decreased in rabbits. Heart rate was increased in dogs and unchanged in rabbits. 3 Blood pressure decreased slightly in dogs, and more markedly in rabbits. To… Show more

“…Blood flow at rest was measured using 15 pm microspheres labelled with 113Stannum (Hudlicka et al, 1981) with injection into the left ventricle via the right carotid artery and withdrawal from one brachial artery. The contralateral brachial artery was cannulated to measure blood pressure.…”

“…To examine the influence of enhanced muscle flow without training-associated muscular contraction, several studies have used chronic peripheral arteriolar dilatation (48,49). Using alpha-1 receptor antagonist prazosin, capillary shear stress was 3-fold (4 to 15 dyn/cm 2 ) greater than in control animals or animals treated by chronic electrical stimulation alone (27,50).…”

“…It is necessary to consider the possibility that 8-PT (Hudlicka et al, 1981;Collis et al, 1984). Since one of the early features of glycerol-induced ARF is a reduction in cardiac output (Hsu et al, 1977), its restoration could be protective.…”
