The plant Siparuna guianensis is used in traditional medicine and has been the target of studies on the development of new drugs for the control of pests and vector insects. The present study was aimed to evaluate the seasonal influence on the content and composition of the essential oil of S. guianensis. The experiment was conducted for 12 months evaluating the yield of the essential oil of leaves throughout the seasons (autumn, winter, spring and summer). The chemical composition of the essential oil was obtained by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The highest oil yield was in autumn and winter, comprising 0.33 and 0.29% (w/w), respectively. The major compound identified was β-myrcene (48.59-24.2%), followed by epicurzerenone (27.24-13.7%) being the most abundant; germacrene D showed lower values of 9.93% in autumn and 13.5-14.34% in the other seasons, besides curzerene that had no production in autumn. The ɣ-elemene component had a higher production of 7.29% in autumn. Compound 2-undecanone did not show significant seasonal changes, with percentages being between 7.26 and 5.43%. The monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes showed similar levels in autumn; however, in the other seasons (winter, spring, and summer), the sesquiterpenes presented higher concentration, reaching 68.54% in summer. The components identified in the essential oil of S. guianensis exhibit interesting biological activities, making this essential oil a promising compound for the development of new biodegradable drugs, repellents, and insecticides. The knowledge about the yield and seasonal composition is fundamental to optimize and maximize the obtainment of compounds of interest for the production of new drugs.

Context: The water extract of Boswellia sacra Flueck. (Burseraceae) is used in the treatment of gastric and hepatic disorders in the Arab countries. Objective: The effect of Boswellia sacra water extract on gastric secretion and experimentally induced gastric ulcers in rats was studied. Materials and methods: Acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers, pylorus ligation, aspirininduced, ethanol-induced, and restraint plus cold stress-induced gastric ulcer models were employed. The effect on normal rats was also studied. The water extract of B. sacra was administered orally at doses of 2 and 5 ml/kg once daily ranging from single dose to 30 d treatment depending on the model. The extract was subjected to GC-MS analysis to determine the presence of various phytoconstituents. Results: Boswellia sacra water extract (5 ml/kg, p.o (per os)) aggravated acetic acid-induced chronic ulcers, wherein an increase in ulcer index (p50.01) and ulcer score (p50.05) was observed. In pylorus-ligated rats, the extract increased gastric content volume (p50.01), free acidity (p50.01), total acidity (p50.01), ulcer index (p50.01), and pepsin activity (p50.05). There was no significant effect on the development of ethanol-induced and aspirin-induced ulcers while an increase in the development of stress-induced ulcers was observed (p50.01). The extract did not produce any ulcers when administered to normal rats. The dose of 2 ml/kg was less proulcerogenic compared with 5 ml/kg. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of several phytoconstituents that included menthol, 3-cyclohexen-1-ol, and octanoic acid. Conclusion: Boswellia sacra water extract has proulcerogenic activity due to its gastric hypersecretory effect.

A comparative study of the volatile terpene fraction isolated from the leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis attacked by the gall wasp (Leptocybe invasa) and from the healthy leaves of the plant was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 59 components representing 89.13 and 88.6%, respectively, of their total volatile fraction contents were analyzed. Of these volatiles, 26 compounds with concentrations greater than (0.1± 0.02%) have been used for statistical comparison. A number of 21of these compounds were identified, in different concentrations, in the leaves volatile fraction of both healthy plants and plants attacked by the wasps. The other 5 volatiles: p-mentha-2-4(8) diene, δ-elemene, β-elemene, E-caryophyllene and bicyclogermacrene, were exclusively found in the volatile fraction of the attacked leaves. The newly produced compounds in the attacked leaves or the change in concentration of those commonly found in that fraction, could be part of the plant defense mechanisms, or/and an element of the plant allelopathic and communication mechanisms. Identifying the components of the gall wasp-damaged leaves can help in their recycling for different physiological, pharmacological and medicinal uses.
