The effect of a dentifrice and mouth rinse combination containing amine fluoride/stannous fluoride on plaque and gingivitis: a 6‐month field study

Abstract: In instruction-resistant patients recruited from dental practices, the combined use of AmF/SnF(2) did not decrease gingivitis at a significant level in comparison with the regular regime of two times daily brushing with an NaF-containing dentifrice. However, the above-mentioned combination resulted in greater plaque reduction than that observed with the use of the conventional dentifrice. When used according to the manufacturer's instructions, this effect on plaque scores was more pronounced.

“…These conflicting outcomes might find their origin in the duration of these two studies because the observation periods were ≥6 months. In a study by Paraskevas , 301 subjects, using either amine fluoride/SnF dentifrice and mouth rinse or a regular sodium fluoride dentifrice, demonstrated a significantly greater increase in staining for the SnF group. In this study, five subjects in this group discontinued the study because they felt that the staining was interfering with their social lives.…”

“…While maintaining a similar antiplaque efficacy, discoloration was decreased [22,23]. In a number of studies on AmF/SnF 2 mouth rinse, tooth discoloration was reported [8,24,25]. Recently, experimental AmF/SnF 2 rinses were tested but without any reduced staining effect [14].…”

“…The sample size of 40 participants per group was calculated a priori (PS: Power and Sample Size program) based on a pooled standard deviation (σ) of 0.23 (as taken from the gingivitis scores in a previous 6‐month mouth rinse study by Paraskevas et al . ) and a detectable difference (δ) of 0.18 (between groups) with an α = 0.05 to obtain 80% power.…”
