The effect of a compression bandage on the distribution of radiodense contrast medium after palmar digital nerve blocks

Abstract: The compression bandage reduced proximal diffusion and lymphatic drainage of contrast material causing it to stay localised around the injection site. Use of compression bandages could thus result in increased specificity of the nerve block and potentially prolong its effect.

“…Palmar digital perineural anesthesia can diffuse proximally and potentially anesthetize lesions in the fetlock region. [31][32][33] Basisesamoid perineural anesthesia can also diffuse proximally and is not specific for the pastern region. 34 Other common sites where local anesthesia can diffuse to (or penetrate) and anesthetize an adjacent structure include anesthesia of the distal tarsal joints anesthetizing the proximal metatarsal region (and vice versa) and anesthesia of the middle carpal/carpometacarpal joints anesthetizing the proximal metacarpal region (and vice versa).…”

“…Faint radiopaque lines, consistent with diffusion of contrast medium in the lymphatic vessels, were not evaluated because they were considered irrelevant to the aim of the study. 11 -Cumulative total proximo-distal diffusion: obtained by adding together the total proximal and total distal contrast medium diffusion.…”
