The effect of 2,4-D and 2M-4K on some oil flax varieties grown under different environmental conditions

Abstract: Some results of a preliminary test conducted at University Farm, St. Paul Minnesota have been given. The following conclusions have been made: 1. Flax plants that had grown slowly both before and after spraying and those that had grown slowly up to the time of spraying did not show as distinct stem bending or as great reduction in height as did those which grew rapidly before spraying. 2. Varietal differences in the response to methoxone and 2,4-D were apparent between Redwing, Dakota, and Minerva. Redwing was… Show more

“…The present investigation confirms that although many varieties of linseed do not differ appreciably in their susceptibility to chlorinated phenoxyacetic acids there are some varieties which are less tolerant than the majority .Where varieties were common to these experiments and to those of other workers, there was a general agreement on the relative resistance. Thus Dakota and Minerva were amongst the most susceptible (see Table 7), and similar results have been obtained in the United States by Tandon (1949) and Paatela & Dunham (1949). The fact that the most susceptible varieties of Exp.…”

“…A similar difference has already been reported for Unseed (oil flax) by Blackman et al (1949), Paatela (1949), Paatela & Dunham (1949) and Aberg, Hagsand & Vaartnou (1949). Since sodium methyl-chlorophenoxyacetate is equally or more toxic than sodium dichlorophenoxyacetate to a variety of annual weeds (e.g.…”

“…A similar effect has been reported with linseed straw by Paatela (1949). At present only a tentative explanation can be put forward to account for this increase in straw production.…”
