The Effect of 0.02% Mitomycin C Injection into the Hair Follicle with Radiofrequency Ablation in Trichiasis Patients

Abstract: PurposeTo investigate the inhibitory effect of 0.02% mitomycin C on eyelash regrowth when injected to the eyelash hair follicle immediately after radiofrequency ablation.MethodsWe prospectively included 21 trichiasis patients from June 2011 to October 2012. Twenty eyes of 14 patients were treated with 0.02% mitomycin C to the hair follicle immediately after radiofrequency ablation in group 1, while radiofrequency ablation only was conducted in ten eyes of seven patients in group 2. Recurrences and complication… Show more

“…10,21 Application of 0.02% mitomycin C, in conjunction with radiofrequency ablation, may help improve the success rate of radiofrequency ablation. 22 Cryotherapy is an effective treatment for trichiasis, involving both small and large segments of the eyelid margin. It is based on the principle that the hair follicles are more sensitive to the destructive effects of freezing than the skin and conjunctiva.…”

“…To further improve mRF results in trichiasis patients, Kim et al studied the effect of combining mitomycin C with RF treatment compared to RF monotherapy. They found that combination therapy had greater success with only a 16.4% recurrence rate compared to 60.7% with monotherapy 6 months after a single treatment (p < 0.01) [9].…”

“…The most commonly reported adverse events were minor, including transient erythema, edema, hyperpigmentation, and mild treatment-associated pain [10,13,14,17,18]. A total of 7 patients treated with mRF across the three trichiasis studies developed eyelid notching [6,8,9].…”
