Abstract:Hemodialysis is a treatment that must be done by patients with chronic renal failure. Hemodialysis can changes the various aspects of life of patients, and it cause anxiety. One of the method that can used to reduce anxiety is Benson relaxation techniques. This technique is a combination of relaxation and elements of religious beliefs espoused. To determine the effect of Benson relaxation techniques for anxiety in patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy. Quasi Experiment pre post test design with comparison g… Show more
“…This result may be explained by the Benson's technique is simple, safe technique, effective, in expensive and easy to learn by patients, and do not need any equipment or resources. On opposite side a study done in Yogyakarta by Kurniasari, 2016 who reported that Benson's relaxation technique have no effect on anxiety scores of hemodialysis patients (42) .This contradiction may be explained by this paper apply Benson's relaxation for a period of two weeks only and this period was not enough to decrease the level of anxiety while our study conducted for two months.…”
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality among elderly. Hemodialysis is the most commonly applied method for treatment, and is accompanied by a high incidence of psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance, which are having a negative impact on one's life. Benson's relaxation technique (BRT) is an effective technique used to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and enhance sleep quality in elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis. Aim: determine the effect of Benson's relaxation technique on anxiety, depression, and sleep quality among elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis. Design: Quasi-experimental, pre and post intervention design was used. Setting: The study was carried out in the hemodialysis unit affiliated to

“…It does not match (Nuri Kurniasari et al, 2016)that the value of pretest and posttest anxiety in the two groups, namely the intervention group and the comparison group, decreased, namely moderate anxiety to mild anxiety. In addition, the two data did not show a significant difference between the intervention and comparison groups.…”

“…(Morita et al, 2020). In addition, the Benson relaxation technique can also improve the patient's sleep quality (Nuri Kurniasari et al, 2016). Benson relaxation therapy usually takes only 10-20 minutes even under any conditions and has no impact on the patient (Anisah & Maliya, 2021).…”
Hemodialysis is a procedure for cleaning blood through an artificial kidney or dialyzer and assisted by a machine. Kidney failure patients undergoing therapy experience anxiety due to various stressors. One way to overcome anxiety is to use relaxation therapy, including Benson relaxation. Benson relaxation is a breathing relaxation technique with the addition of an element of belief in the form of words that express the anxiety that is being experienced by the patient. The purpose of this literature is to determine the effectiveness of Benson's relaxation on reducing anxiety in chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. A literature review that is comparing some literature through the journal databases used are Pubmed, Google Scholar, Sciencedirect, Garuda Portal and Jane Semantic. The keywords are "benson relaxation, anxiety, chronic renal failure and hemodialysis" or "benon relaxation technique on anxiety of patient hemodialysis" or "benson relaxation for anxiety disorders" or "benson relaxation for patients undergoing hemodialysis" or "non-pharmacological therapy for reduce anxiety from 2016-2021 full text. There are seven journals reviewed and used in this literature review. The results show that Benson relaxation is proven to be effective in reducing anxiety in chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis in a quiet environment, patients can relax the muscles of the body, focus for 10-15 minutes and think positively.
This research aimed to determine the effect of Benson relaxation to reduce the level of anxiety on chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. The total number of subjects are 5 patients with chronic renal failure who had comorbid hypertension who undergoing hemodialysis and scored high on anxiety. The instrument used in this research was an adaptation of the State-Trait State Anxiety Inventory short revision version scale with state scale reliability value of 0,924 and trait scale of 0,936. The data were analyzed using paired sample t-test. This research is quasy experimental using experimental design one group pretest-posttest design. The result showed that there is a significant effect of Benson relaxation on anxiety of chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysi. The mean of pretest score was 23,4 and posttest score was 9,6. The implication of this research is that applying Benson relaxation before hemodialysis can help to reduce the degree of anxiety on chronic renal failure patients undertake hemodialysis.
