The Effect and Safety of Short-Term Creatine Supplementation on Performance of Push-Ups

Abstract: The effects of short-term oral creatine (Cr) supplementation on exercise performance and on blood pressure and renal function were assessed. Thirty-five healthy, active duty, U.S. Army volunteers (20 men and 15 women; age, 22-36 years) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, supplemented their diet for 7 days with 20 g/day of either Cr or taurine (as placebo). There was no significant difference in 2-minute push-up counts between the Cr and taurine groups from before to after supplementation (p = 0.437; power = 0.98). The… Show more

“…In the present study the researchers wanted to quantify increases in fluids caused by CrM supplementation and its affect on arterial pressure. Five existing studies were found in which arterial pressure was not affected following the loading phase of CrM supplementation [1,2,8,10,12] . However, none of these studies collected arterial pressure data daily as it was only recorded before and after the loading phase [10] .…”

“…Five studies have found no significant change in arterial pressure before and after the loading phase of CrM supplementation [1,4,[12][13][14] . However, these studies did not measure the arterial pressure daily during the loading phase; hence any changes in arterial pressure may have gone undetected.…”

“…Except for muscle cramps in two patients during the creatine period, there were no major side effects. Armentano et al studied the effects of creatine at a dose of 20 g/d for 7 days in healthy soldiers. From the point of view of safety and tolerability, there were no changes in the blood pressure, weight, body mass composition, and serum CK.…”

“…A dose de suplementação habitualmente utilizada é de 2-6 g/dia por um período de 10 dias a 10 semanas 31 . Não há relatos de danos renais em indivíduos sadios que utilizam carnitina como suplemento dietético, mas há risco de agravamento da função renal em nefropatas 32 . No momento, não existem conclusões definitivas sobre o efeito benéfico da carnitina no metabolismo do exercício em atletas sem deficiência nutricional 3 .…”
