The Economy, The Biosphere and Planetary Boundaries: Towards Biosphere Economics

Abstract: Nine planetary boundaries have been proposed, capturing essential biophysical processes that sustain the Earth System and its biosphere in an accommodating state for humanity. Drawing on economics literature, we propose conditions under which remaining within these boundaries is in line with economic policy. We assert that pervasive uncertainties combined with impacts of trespassing planetary boundaries clearly legitimate using safe minimum standards or precautionary approaches. Moreover, information about the… Show more

“…Applying such a framework must take into account the uncertainty over thresholds, abrupt and irreversible change, and the magnitude of welfare impacts [4,8,13]. As we have emphasized in this paper, recognizing the need for planetary boundaries to limit human impacts on critical global sinks and resources is synonymous with the "strong sustainability" perspective in economics (Table 1).…”

“…Based on this scientific view, some economists have begun examining how such planetary boundaries should be established, given the uncertainty over thresholds, abrupt and irreversible change, and the magnitude of welfare impacts [8,13].…”

“…We added references we are aware of, that cite the concept and/or are themselves cited in this context-but that do not appear in Web of Science (e.g. Raworth 2012, Crépin and Folke 2014, Fanning and O'Neill 2016. We obtained a total of 224 references (figure 1-note that 2 response articles are excluded from the count).…”

“…These uncertainties will most directly manifest in the definition of stable and unstable conditions for the response variable and integrating uncertainty into water management and governance, particularly aleatoric uncertainty, which is inherently unpredictable (Poff et al, 2016). The precautionary principle suggests that, as uncertainty increases, so should the setback from the estimated threshold value, particularly given the large impacts of crossing these thresholds (Crépin & Folke, 2015;Margolis & Naevdal, 2008) and the presence of substantial time lags (Crépin & Naevdal, 2019).…”
