The Economy-Carbon Nexus in China: A Multi-Regional Input-Output Analysis of the Influence of Sectoral and Regional Development

Abstract: China has become the world's largest carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emitter. Sectoral production activities promote economic development while also adding considerably to national CO 2 emissions. Due to their different sectoral structures, each region shows different levels of economic development and CO 2 emissions. The Chinese government hopes to achieve the dual objectives of economic growth and CO 2 emissions reduction by encouraging those sectors that have high economic influence and low environmental influence. … Show more

“…Increasing the collecting area using idle land close to the curing barn groups can also directly increase the proportion of solar energy available for curing in the resource-rich regions. On the thermal efficiency of the solar-self collector with hot water, the collection efficiencies above 94% have recently been achieved by [16]. Many environmental policies that encourage use of solar energy have been issued by the government [4].…”

“…More recently, and in the context of the increasing importance of inter‐regional and international trade, nexus studies applied MRIO (Miller and Blair ; Duchin and Steenge ) and ecological network analysis (Fath and Patten ) to explore structural properties and sectorial interactions of extended economic systems (Guo and Shen ; Wang and Chen ; Duan and Chen ; White et al. ; Yan and Ge ).…”

“…For example, Yan and Ge proved that the increasing GDP could accelerate the development of power generation industry, e.g., the installed capacity and the generating capacity [20]. The dual influencing relationships between economy development and power industry will stimulate the efficiency enhancement.…”

“…Lina et al, calculated the energy return on investment (EROI) by a mixed physical and monetary approach in order to redefine and evaluate the EROI for the national economy [19]. From the relationship between economy and carbon, Yan and Ge assessed the sectoral and regional development by input and output analysis [20]. They found that geographic location and past preferential policies were the most important factors influencing the local economic growth and CO2 emissions reduction.…”
