The Economics of Controlling Infectious Diseases on Dairy Farms

Abstract: Cost‐effective disease control on the dairy farm can enhance productivity and subsequently profitability. Previous economic studies on animal disease have focused on production losses and evaluation of disease eradication programs and have provided little guidance on the optimal prevention action. This paper presents a theoretical model on the economics of livestock disease and develops an empirical model to determine the optimal set of control strategies for four production‐limiting cattle diseases: bovine vi… Show more

“…A large applied modeling literature has emerged at the interface of preventative veterinary medicine and economics (Perry, McDermott, and Randolph 2001;Chi et al 2002;Bennett 2003;Mintiens et al 2003). Some of this literature regards understanding and costing control and eradication strategies upon the event of an epidemic outbreak (Mahul and Gohin 1999).…”

“…Due to historical evidence of a confounding effect on serological testing for FMD, OIE criteria mandate that nations employing the vaccine will be barred from exporting live animals to international markets. Similarly, all live animal exports will be barred as soon as an FMD outbreak is detected [2]. North American control strategies are patterned on the U.K. model of border inspections and stamping-out of infected herds [3].…”

“…They will be treated, if economically feasible. The feedlot operator's goal is to minimize the economic loss caused by the spread of disease [2]. There is no premium gained by selling a healthy animal over a sick one, merely the loss associated with an inability to sell a sick animal.…”
