Nigeria is a developing country with an insufficient supply of energy to meet the continuously growing demand. However, there are several biomass resources available within the country. This paper presents a desk review, which investigates the potential resources for biomass energy generation within the country. Energy policies to aid biomass use as an energy source within the country were also reviewed. Biomass resources identified within Nigeria include forest residues, agricultural residues, human and animal wastes, aquatic biomass, and energy crops. However, several of the resources, particularly agricultural residues, have competing uses, such as livestock feed and soil rejuvenation. An estimation of the technical energy potential of the biomass resources revealed that about 2.33 EJ could be generated from the available resources in Nigeria. Agricultural residues have an energy potential of about 1.09 EJ, with cassava, maize, oil palm, plantain, rice, and sorghum being the major contributors. Animal wastes, municipal solid waste, and forest residues have energy potentials of 0.65, 0.11, and 0.05 EJ, respectively. The potentials of wood fuel and charcoal are 0.38 and 0.05 EJ, respectively. The study found that despite the available potential and existing policies, not much has been done in the implementation of large-scale bioenergy within the country. However, there has been laboratory and research-scale investigations. The review suggests that more policies and stronger enforcement will aid bioenergy development within the country. From the review, it has been suggested that the agricultural sector needs to be developed to generate more biomass resources. More research, development, and implementation have to be carried out on biomass resources and bioenergy generation processes. The production of non-edible energy crops in marginal lands should also be considered prime to the development of bioenergy within the country.

Resumo: O artigo em questão se debruça na ideia de que há uma necessidade energética de antecipar um futuro escasso de combustíveis fósseis, uma vez que são limitados e poluentes e, com isso, analisar as ferramentas para substituir uma demanda energética que cresce de forma exponencial. Para tal, é necessário um novo modo de pensamento onde pelo menos uma etapa será adicionada ao processo: a produção; não mais apenas extração, refinamento (onde é efetivamente a produção de combustível) e distribuição. Nesse contexto, prevê-se um processo mais lento e, em um primeiro momento, menos eficiente comparado aos combustíveis fósseis. Porém, com uma maior atenção,como sinônimo de investimento voltada ao método, cabendo aqui destacar a importância ciência dos transgênicos na potencialização de eficiência desse setor, para assim ser possível alcançar conformidade entre a natureza e o ser humano, e não só uma relação parasita quando se pensa em petróleo [1][2][3][4][5].

The characteristics of biogas materials (BMs) and the preference for their bio-methane production effectiveness and efficiencies differ by geographical location and are currently an active discussion. This study assessed and ranked BMs based on their biogas production sustainability potential. BMs including Cow dung (CD), food waste (FW), poultry dung (PuD), and fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) were selected from an area in South-West Nigeria. Questionnaire responses on six sustainability criteria (𝐶𝑖) [Population, availability, non-competing substrate, acceptability, biodegradability, and yield] were collected for the selected BMs. The criteria preference weight (𝜔𝑖) was determined using AHP, while a part-subjective, part-objective method was employed to score the BMs based on the 𝐶𝑖. The Sustainability Ranking Model (SRM) was formulated to rank the BMs' sustainability performances. 𝜔𝑖 results showed that acceptability and non-competing substrate were the most and least preferred criteria while most to the least sustainable BMs were FW, CD, FVW, and PuD.
