“…Cymodocea is not found nearer than Portuguese East Africa, some 2,000 miles away, where climatic and hydrological factors are very different from those in False Bay. Zostera capemis is abundant only 30 miles from False Bay in the Klein River estuary at Hermanus (Scott, Harrison and Macnae, 1950) and is abundant in Langebaan Lagoon, a southerly arm of Saldanha Bay (Day, 1959) : its absence from False Bay appears to be due to excessive wave action and to lack of silt in the substratum. Nor is there a common occurrence of the cold-water alga, Gracillaria confervoides, that is found only in the shallows of Hout Bay on the other side of the Cape Peninsula.…”
