The peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), has a complex reproductive mode in which some lineages reproduce by continuous parthenogenesis, whereas others reproduce sexually once a year. The climate is thought to act directly on the reproductive mode, because sexual eggs are the only form that can resist frost in cold regions. Sexual reproduction necessitates an obligatory host alternation that may result in long-distance dispersal. Here, we examined the genetic variability at seven microsatellite loci of populations of M. persicae in France, where both reproductive modes occur. We provide clear genetic evidence that the breeding system affects genotypic variability, as cyclically parthenogenetic aphids are far more variable than their obligately parthenogenetic counterparts. A temporal decrease in genetic variability and a temporal genetic differentiation effect suggest the existence of selective factors that play an important role in shaping the genetic structure of M. persicae populations. Lastly, differences in the population structure between reproductive modes suggest that the migration associated with the change of host during sexual reproduction lowers the level of population differentiation.

RESUMO O afídeo Myzus persicae (Sulzer, 1776) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) é uma das principais pragas de diversas culturas em condições de campo ou em cultivo protegido. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas na longevidade e nos aspectos reprodutivos de ABSTRACT The aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer, 1776) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the main pests in a number of crops both under field and protected conditions. The objective of this work was to study the effect of temperature on longevity and reproductive p a r a m e t e r s o f M . p e r s i c a e o n e g g p l a n t ( S o l a n u m melongena L.). The experiment was carried out under controlled conditions of temperature (15, 20, 25 and 30 o C), relative humidity (70 ± 10%) and photophase (12 hours). The experimental units consisted of Petri dishes containing agar-water (1%) solidified. Aphids were kept individually o n l e a f d i s c s o f e g g p l a n t ( 3 c m d i a m e t e r ) a t e a c h C). T h u s , t e m p e r a t u re s b e t w e e n 1 5 a n d 2 0o C a re m o re favorable to M. persicae.

[1997][1998]. It was carried out in Alfenas region (South of Minas Gerais state), from July to September, 1997 (planting I) and August to September, 1998 (planting II). Plants were weekly sampled by collecting leaves with aphids. The species Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) were collected at planting I, both reaching peak population on the 2 nd week of August, 1997; at planting II only M. persicae was collected, and reached its maximum number of individuals on the 3 rd week of September, 1998. The population of M. persicae showed a correlation with rainfall and with the plant phenology (number of leaflets/leaf) in both potato winter planting.
