The ecology ofEchinorhynchus truttaeSchrank, 1788 (Acanthocephala) in a trout stream in North Wales

Abstract: Periodicity of occurrence in the final host has been observed in only a few of the known Acanthocephala of fish (Van Cleave, 1916; Steinstrasser, 1936; Komarova, 1950; Shulman & Shulman-Albova, 1953). The periodicity appears to be due to the simultaneous operation of a complex of physiological, developmental and ecological factors. In the present investigation a detailed study has been made of both the occurrence and the developmental cycle of Echinorhynchus truttae in its hosts in a small trout stream, Afo… Show more

“…Competitive exclusion has yet to be demonstrated between any species of acanthocephalans in their intermediate hosts, and so this explanation appears less likely. Awachie (1965) believed the greater abundance of E. truttae upstream was due to the greater number of G. pulex and the narrowness of the stream promoting greater contact between intermediate and definitive hosts, and Chubb (1964Chubb ( , 1967b related the distribution of Acanthocephalus clavula in Lake Bala and its neighbouring streams to the occurrence of its intermediate host, Asellus meridianus, in the region. The intermediate host plays little part in determining the distribution of P. luevis in the River Avon.…”
