The Ecology of Analytics in Education: Stakeholder Interests in Data-Rich Educational Systems

Abstract: <p class="0abstract">In this paper, we suggest an ecological perspective on the role of analytics in education. We discuss how different stakeholder positions in education points to different interests in using analytics. As a point of reference, we examine the Danish case of ICT integration in primary and lower secondary school (Danish: Folkeskolen) in order to study cases of emerging and at times conflicting stakeholder interests. On this basis, we discuss how this complexity of the educational ecosyst… Show more

“…In addition, there is still a need for further empirical studies on the use of digital learning materials in the classroom with special emphasis on how students actually utilize the different affordances that digital learning materials make available. In addition, although we have approached the question of digitization in the L1 subject from the perspective of learning materials, one of the key rationales behind the digitization of learning environments in general concerns issues relating to data-driven education (Berthelsen & Tannert, 2019). This represents an important direction for future research.…”

“…In this article, I have therefore attempted to highlight the need for an approach to writing research that accommodates critiques of reductionism and technocentrism by bridging the gap between technology-centered and human-centered approaches for studying writing. It is of course nothing new to claim that data analysis and interpretation go hand in hand, but this perspective is often lacking in many discussions on the potential of CL and data science at large, particularly in discussions on policymaking (Berthelsen & Tannert, 2019). This means that too much emphasis is put on the data itself without paying sufficient attention to how this data can be meaningfully interpreted and made sense of within an educational framework, which by nature is normative and contested.…”

“…The third article, authored by Ulf Dalvad Berthelsen and Morten Tannert [3], also adopt the stakeholder perspective but examine in this case Danish case of ICT integration in primary and lower secondary school in order to study cases of emerging and at times conflicting stakeholder interests. The authors propose an ecological perspective on the role of analytics in education.…”
