The ecological risk assessment and suggestions on heavy metals in river sediments of Jinan

Abstract: The concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cr, Hg, As, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni) in six river sediment samples were collected for evaluation of the degree of the heavy metals pollution distribution and ecological risk of three main rivers' sediments in Jinan. Multivariate statistical techniques were used to determine the most common pollution sources. The results illustrated that all of the metals in Damatou and Xinfengzhuang sections of the Xiaoqing River were much higher than the background value, and the level of … Show more

“…Of all the pollutants in the discharges that endanger ecosystem, heavy metals play a significant role [4,5]. When accumulated to some extent in sediment, heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, Hg, and Cr can be toxic to plants, animals, humans, and aquatic life due to the characteristic of bioaccumulation, persistence, and environmental toxicity [1,2,6]. e heavy metals discharged in the water bodies through different sources would finally be enriched in the sediments by adsorption, complexation, flocculation, and sedimentation [7,8].…”

“…In addition, this residential area is also home to petrochemical factories. The factories could produce wastewater containing high levels of Pb and organic matter (Wang et al, 2017;Dong et al, 2022). Hence, the domestic mixed factory discharge is likely to be an important source and disturbance factor of Pb in the Xiaoqing River.…”

“…Recent years have seen steady promotion of the Xiaoqing River basin ecological environment comprehensive management plan and a progressive restoration of the watershed ecosystem [23]. The Xiaoqing River study is currently being conducted at the watershed and regional scales, and the evaluation findings are somewhat broad and challenging to apply to river management [24,25]. As a result, in order to determine the Xiaoqing River's functional state as precisely as possible, this study established a multiindicator and multilevel multifunctional river evaluation indicator system and assessed its function at the level of river segments.…”
