The Ecological Characteristics of Seed Germination and Seedling Establishment of Manglietia patungensis: Implication for Species Conservation

Abstract: Manglietia patungensis is an endangered species distributed aggregately in evergreen broad-leaved forest communities in Southwest China. A controlling experiment was employed to test the effects of soil type and shade degree on seed germination and seedling establishment by using four soil types and three shade treatments with five replicates. Results showed that the germination rate of M. patungensis seeds was relatively low ranging from 19% to 31%. Shade degree and soil type had no significant effect on seed… Show more

“…From the study, Super II with the highest value (4.50) for first count mean germination percentage demonstrated the tendency for rapid germination, metabolism, establishment and growth in the field. This, in harmony with Chen et al [19], is an indication of a superior agronomic performance and yield. Further, the Local and M1155 varieties recorded the highest values for seedling vigour indices I and II (283.27, 72.33) respectively and they are considered to be more vigorous.…”

“…Spatial discordance occurs when postdispersal processes vary spatially or temporally (Chen, Liu, Chen, & Jia, ; García Ramón Obeso, & Martínez, ; Schupp, ; Schupp & Fuentes, ), and is often inferred via associations between survival and habitat type (García Ramón Obeso, & Martínez, ; Gómez‐Aparicio, ; Rother et al., ). Yet we know little about the causal mechanisms that shape the spatial distribution during early recruitment, and we are limited in our ability to connect seed dispersal to demographic consequences (Schupp & Fuentes, ; Wang & Smith, ).…”

“…Dari seluruh siklus hidup tumbuhan, perkecambahan biji dan pembentukan semai adalah tahap yang paling rentan terhadap stress lingkungan. Pada tahap ini terjadi seleksi alam yang paling ketat, sehingga angka kematiannya cukup tinggi (Chen et al, 2012). Selama perkecambahan berlangsung sangat bergantung pada cadangan makanan dalam biji, baik berupa kotiledon atau endosperm.…”
