The Ebbinghaus illusion with small inducers appears larger on the right side

Abstract: The effects of left and right alignment on the Ebbinghaus illusion were investigated in three experiments. In Experiment 1, the Ebbinghaus illusion was presented on the left or right side, and the points of subjective equality (PSE) were measured. Only the central disk of the figure with small inducers was perceived larger when it was positioned on the right side rather than on the left. In Experiments 2 and 3, left, right, and central placement were used to determine if the results of Experiment 1 were caused… Show more

“…For instance, Muller-Lyer illusion has been found to be stronger in the left visual hemifield (Clem & Pollack, 1975). Conversely, Saneyoshi (2018) found greater size overestimation effect with Ebbinghaus inducers on the right visual field. Also size discrimination has been found to be more accurate in the left visual field, implying that the perceived size is more resistant to illusory effects in the left visual field (Corballis, Funnell, & Gazzaniga, 2002).…”

“…Combining the four conditions and nine sizes resulted in 36 object pairs. As the screen side might have an effect on the illusion strength [ 22 ], each object in these pairs could be displayed at the left or the right side of the screen. These two variants were each presented five times, resulting in a total of 360 trials.…”
