Paleomagnetic analyses were carried out on samples from 19 localities within two different mega-tectonic units in Northern Romania: Tisza-Dacia (11 localities) and ALCAPA (8 localities). The samples cover a range of different lithologies: (1) Late Cretaceous red-coloured marl to marly limestone, (2) EoOligocene flysch sediments, and (3) mid-Miocene (Langhian) tuffite (Dej tuff and related sediments). The Late Cretaceous and mid-Miocene specimens carry secondary paleomagnetic signals exhibiting a counter clockwise deflection of the paleo-declinations by some 30°, while the Eo-Oligocene localities indicate an overall clockwise deflected (between some 45°and >90°) paleodeclination with respect to present-day north. Clockwise rotation postdates the age of sedimentation (Lower Oligocene), as well as (at least partially) thrusting of the Pienides onto the Tisza-Dacia mega-tectonic unit, which occurred between 20.5 and 18.5 Ma. Clockwise rotation predates post-12 Ma counter clockwise rotations inferred for the mid-Miocene localities.Surprisingly, the clockwise rotations of the first rotational stage not only affected the (par-) autochthonous sedimentary cover of the Tisza-Dacia megatectonic unit, but also the allochthonous flysch nappes of the Pienides, i.e. the eastern tip of the ALCAPA mega-tectonic unit. Well-documented opposed rotation of the remainder of ALCAPA necessitates a detachment of this eastern tip of ALCAPA after 18. Die Rotation der Eo-Oligozänen Proben fand nach der Sedimentation der jüngsten Proben (unteres Oligozän), und zumindest teilweise nach dem Deckenschub der Pieniden (20.5-18.5 Ma) auf den Tisza-Dacia Block statt. Diese Rotation mit dem Uhrzeigersinn geht der durch die mittel-Miozänen Proben dokumentierten gegenläufigen Rotation (ab 12 Ma) voraus.Die Rotationen der früheren Phase wurden nicht nur in den Sedimenten aus der (par-) autochthonen Bedeckung von Tisza-Dacia, sondern auch in den überschobenen Pieniden nachgewiesen. Dieses Ergebnis ist auf den ersten Blick überraschend, da sie Teil von ALCAPA sind, der Rest von ALCAPA zu dieser Zeit aber in einem gegenläufigen Sinn, also gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, rotierte. Diese gegenläufigen Rotationen erfordern also eine tektonische Ablösung der östlichsten Spitze von ALCAPA vom Rest dieser grosstektonischen Einheit. Der wahrscheinlichste Ort für eine solche Ablösung befindet sich an den Rändern der Transkarpathischen Depression. Die zweite Rotationsphase, ca. 30°gegen den Uhrzeigersinn nach 12 Ma, ist auch aus dem OstSlovakischen Becken bekannt. Sowohl die Internen West-Karpathen westlich des Ost-Slovakischen Beckens, als auch das südliche Apuseni Gebirge, zeigen nach 12 Ma ein vom Arbeitsgebiet abweichendes Rotationsverhalten.

Extensive structural field observations and seismic interpretation allowed us to delineate 7 deformation phases in the study area for the Cenozoic period. Phase D1 indicates NW-SE compression and perpendicular extension in the Late Oligocene-early Eggenburgian and it was responsible for the development of a wedge-shaped Paleogene sequence in front of north-westward propagating blind reverse faults. D2 is represented by E-W compression and perpendicular extension in the middle Eggenburgian-early Ottnangian. The D1 and D2 phases resulted in the erosion of Paleogene suites on elevated highs. Phase D2 was followed by a counterclockwise rotation, described in earlier publications. When considering the age of sediments deformed by the syn-sedimentary D3 deformation and preliminary geochronological ages of deformed volcanites the time of the first CCW rotation can be shifted slightly younger (~17-16.5 Ma) than previously thought (18.5-17.5 Ma). Another consequence of our new timing is that the extrusional tectonics of the ALCAPA unit, the D2 local phase, could also terminate somewhat later by 1 Myr. D4 shows NE-SW extension in the late Karpatian-Early Badenian creating NW-SE trending normal faults which connected the major NNE-SSW trending sinistral faults. The D5 and D6 phases are late syn-rift deformations indicating E-W extension and NW-SE extension, respectively. D5 indicates syn-sedimentary deformation in the Middle Badenian-early Sarmatian and caused the synsedimentary thickening of mid-Miocene suites along NNE-SSW trending transtensional faults. D5 postdates the second CCW rotation which can be bracketed between ~16-15 Ma. This timing is somewhat older than previously considered and is based on new geochronological dates of pyroclastite rocks which were not deformed by this phase. D6 was responsible for further deepening of half-grabens during the Sarmatian. D7 is post-tilt NNW-SSE extension and induced the deposition of the 700 m thick Pannonian wedge between 11.6-8.92 Ma in the southern part of the study area.

Abstract:The locality of the northeastern most part of Slovakian Flysch belt belongs to interesting areas in terms of the interpretation of geothermal conditions in mutual relation with the lithosphere structure and their tectonic development. The evaluation of the geothermal energy sources parameters of this locality is likewise worthwhile. The region under study has the centre in position of the borehole Zboj ZB-1 and spreads out Slovakia also in Poland and Ukraine.Our contribution provides the analyses of existing geothermal data enhanced by the construction of temperature field models corresponding to the global and local aspects that influence the temperature and heat flow density distributions. The analyses are related to the structures and effects of separate phenomena along as well as across the Carpathian arc. The model calculations were carried out both by analytical and numerical methods of solving the heat transfer equations including their steady state forms and transient cases too.Besides the regional trend of thermal activity decrease in direction from East-Slovakian Basin to the outer Carpathian units the combined local influences are applied: subsurface thermophysical parameters of rock complexes distributions, non-stationary sources from supposed subvolcanic bodies in close surroundings of borehole Zboj ZB-1, and the effects of the hydrological factors. Considering the observed higher thermal activity in arched zone along the Carpathian structures we discussed the thermal effects of rock complexes supposed as a source of regional Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly and the transfer of heat from East-Slovakian Basin to Outer Carpathian Flysch units. The analysis and the modelling results suggest that the mentioned activity is caused by the influences of source type phenomena mainly related to deep fault systems at the margin of the European Platform. That means the anomalies in heat flow density distribution can reach the value 70 mW/m 2 and more in the zone above the thermally active deep-fault system with the presence of volcanism and hydrothermal activities.
