The Early Terrestrial Fungal Lineage of Conidiobolus—Transition from Saprotroph to Parasitic Lifestyle

Abstract: Fungi of the Conidiobolus group belong to the family Ancylistaceae (Entomophthorales, Entomophthoromycotina, Zoopagomycota) and include over 70 predominantly saprotrophic species in four similar and closely related genera, that were separated phylogenetically recently. Entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Batkoa are very close morphologically to the Conidiobolus species. Their thalli share similar morphology, and they produce ballistic conidia like closely related entomopathogenic Entomophthoraceae. Ballistic c… Show more

“…Our phylogenetic analyses of the 18S-28S rDNA and genome-scale datasets showed A. closterii actually belongs to Entomophthoromycotina despite its great ecological distinctiveness. Our phylogenetic analyses also strongly supported the recent taxonomic revisions of Ancylistaceae (Nie et al 2020;Gryganskyi et al 2022). Ancylistes closterii was sister to the clade of Entomophthoraceae + paraphyletic Conidiobolus s.l.…”

“…S3). However, two previous analyses showed different positions, sister to Entomophthoraceae (Gryganskyi et al 2022) or sister to Entomophthoraceae + Capillidiaceae + Neoconidiobolaceae (Möckel et al 2022). These incongruences were probably caused by abnormally divergent rDNA sequences of Batkoaceae.…”
