Yeast Saccharomyces and its derivatives have been largely used in livestock and poultry nutrition for their potential positive impact on growth, performance, and general health. Originally included in animal diets as a source of protein, yeasts can also offer a wide range of by-products with interesting bioactive compounds that would confer uses beyond nutrition. Although its supplementation in livestock, poultry and even in humans is well documented, the available body of literature on the use of yeast and its derivatives in companion animals’ food, mainly dogs and cats’ diets, is still developing. Despite this, gut microbiota modulation, immune system enhancement or decreasing of potentially pathogenic microorganisms have been reported in pets when using these products, highlighting their possible role as probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics. This review attempts to provide the reader with a comprehensive on the effects of Saccharomyces and its derivatives in pets and the possible mechanisms that confer their functional properties.

RESUMODiversas etiologias podem gerar soluções de continuidade na pele, destacando-se os procedimentos cirúrgicos e os traumas de alta energia. Dessa maneira, quando a pele é lesionada o processo de cicatrização é iniciado, sendo este uma combinação de eventos físicos, químicos e celulares para que o tecido seja restaurado e retorne a desempenhar sua atividade fisiológica. A exposição das camadas internas do tegumento pode favorecer o desenvolvimento de complicações, principalmente as infecções, que acarretam em retardo no reparo tecidual e podem evoluir para quadros sistêmicos. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se descrever os principais produtos tópicos utilizados na atualidade para a cicatrização de feridas dos cães e gatos. Desse modo, existe uma grande variedade de produtos disponíveis para o uso na ferida, logo, esses produtos atuam de forma importante em todas as fases da cicatrização, com o intuito de evitar complicações e reduzir o tempo de recuperação tecidual. Os produtos tópicos usados possuem funções diversas, são: antissépticos, antimicrobianos, potencializadores da cicatrização e protetores da ferida. Portanto, existem várias combinações de protocolos para o manejo da ferida dos animais, sendo imprescindível à realização da avaliação individual do paciente para escolha da melhor combinação de produtos para determinada ferida. Prior to genetic mapping, the majority of drug discovery efforts involved phenotypic screening, wherein compounds were screened in either in vitro or in vivo models thought to mimic the disease state of interest. While never completely abandoning phenotypic approaches, the labor intensive nature of such tests encouraged the pharmaceutical industry to move away from them in favor of target-based drug discovery, which facilitated throughput and allowed for the efficient screening of large numbers of compounds. However, a consequence of reliance on target-based screening was an increased number of failures in clinical trials due to poor correlation between novel mechanistic targets and the actual disease state. As a result, the field has seen a recent resurrection in phenotypic drug discovery approaches. In this work, we highlight some recent phenotypic projects from our industrial past and in our current academic drug discovery environment that have provided encouraging results.
